Monastiraki Katalimata
Author: Krzysztof Nowicki
Publisher: INSTAP Academic Press
ISBN: 1623030609
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 329
Book Description
At first sight, the cliffside site of Katalimata looks like an extreme refuge place where one might expect small groups of people hiding for a brief time during the most serious period of threat. Excavation of the largest of the terraces, however, has shown that use of the place was often long-lasting and more complex. The most interesting result of the project was the identification at Katalimata of almost all the same phases known from elsewhere in Crete as periods of disturbances, relocations, and destructions. This monograph provides a detailed discussion of the six occupational phases recorded on the largest of Monastiraki Katalimata's terraces and offers a reconstruction of the site's role in the context of Cretan history.

From Ritual to Repertoire
Author: Arnold Miller
Publisher: John Wiley & Sons
ISBN: 9780471848974
Category : Education
Languages : en
Pages : 550
Book Description
Using a systems approach firmly grounded in cognitive development theory and findings, this book offers a new, well-researched method for intervening with severely disturbed children--autistic, brain-damaged, retarded, emotionally deprived, and developmentally delayed. This approach emphasizes building on the strengths of each child's coping mechanisms rather than on conventional behavior modification techniques, which the authors see as raising serious ethical questions. Their approach has been tried and tested in clinical practice and has demonstrated its efficacy. The book examines the formation of systems in normal and abnormal development and discusses specifics of assessment and intervention with disordered children.

Parts of Speech
Author: Umberto Ansaldo
Publisher: John Benjamins Publishing
ISBN: 902722255X
Category : Language Arts & Disciplines
Languages : en
Pages : 300
Book Description
Parts of Speech are a central aspect of linguistic theory and analysis. Though a long-established tradition in Western linguistics and philosophy has assumed the validity of Parts of Speech in the study of language, there are still many questions left unanswered. For example, should Parts of Speech be treated as descriptive tools or are they to be considered universal constructs? Is it possible to come up with cross-linguistically valid formal categories, or are categories of language structure ultimately language-specific? Should they be defined semantically, syntactically, or otherwise? Do non-Indo-European languages reveal novel aspects of categorical assignment? This volume attempts to answer these and other fundamental questions for linguistic theory and its methodology by offering a range of contributions that spans diverse theoretical persuasions and contributes to our understanding of Parts of Speech with analyses of new data sets. These articles were originally published in "Studies in Language" 32:3 (2008).

The Porta Stabia Neighborhood at Pompeii Volume I
Author: Steven J. R. Ellis
Publisher: Oxford University Press
ISBN: 0192692542
Category : Art
Languages : en
Pages : 779
Book Description
This is the first of four volumes that present the results from the University of Cincinnati's archaeological excavations of the Porta Stabia neighborhood at Pompeii. These excavations targeted two town blocks on either side of the via Stabiana (insulae VIII.7 and I.1), which comprised modest houses, shops, workshops, food and drink outlets, and hospitality buildings. The present volume describes and documents the phased, structural development of this neighborhood over several centuries. The earliest discernible activity here dates to the 6th century BCE, with the insulae taking their definitive shape only in the 2nd century BCE. It is from this time that production activities dominate the neighborhood, only to be wholly replaced by retail-oriented street-fronts from the early 1st century CE. Underpinning this narrative of urban development is a focus on the social and structural making of the Porta Stabia neighborhood, along with an interest in both the micro- (urban site formation processes) and macro-contextualization of the site (setting the results within a larger historic and urban framework).
