Book Description
The university is an institution that goes back to the Middle Ages. As universitas magistrorum et scholarium, the university was a community of scholars and students gathered around books and preoccupied with study and the search for truth. What is the role of the university today? The meanings of teaching, study, and research have changed. Screens are replacing books, online learning environments are replacing lecture halls, and students are becoming learners. In the context of a growing emphasis on innovation and development, competition among institutions, and the privatization of knowledge, the role of communities of scholars and students is changing. Some argue that the university is entering a new phase; others claim that we face the end of the university. Curating the European University features projects involving new ways of publishing, alternative organizations of departments, proposals for open access and open source, and university architecture and accessibility; it offers a unique contribution to the public debate on the role of the university.

Book Description
In the European Convention, parliamentarians and government representatives from the Member States have elaborated the Draft Constitution establishing a Constitution for Europe. This process requires academic guidance and analysis. The European Constitutional Law Network provides an important forum of associated constitutional and European lawyers from different old and new Member States (www.ecln.net). The structure of the future constitution and the general lines of argument underlying the deliberations of the Convention are the focus of the individual contributions to this volume which were presented on the occasion of the second ECLN conference in summer 2002 in Rome. Against the background of their national constitutional and legal orders, the contributors demonstrate their expectations for the European constitution in the making. Thereby, the deliberations provide a pan-European basis for the debate on the future Constitution for Europe.

Book Description
"Conflict Prevention" evaluates the institutional record on conflict prevention, identifies current trends in conflict prevention practice, and makes recommendations on improving organizational capacity. This volume brings together a diverse group of individuals involved in conflict prevention activities: scholars from developed and developing countries, and practitioners with insights on the work of regional organizations and the United Nations. The first part of the book addresses the question: What is successful conflict prevention? The distinctive answers to this question reflect an understanding of conflict prevention that is both analytically rigorous and useful to practitioners. Conflict prevention can be understood as an important but understated element of statecraft and coercive diplomacy, as the physical presence of a deterrent force, or as a rehabilitative action taken to prevent the re-emergence of violence. Collectively, these interpretations point to the malleability of conflict prevention as a theory and as a policy. Contributors to the second part of the volume reflect on how existing mechanisms and instruments for conflict prevention can be properly evaluated and improved. They focus on several institutions that are at the forefront of conflict prevention policy: the EU, the OSCE, NATO, and the UN. They further show how informational and analytical needs can be used to enhance the quality of conflict analysis and its policy relevance. Drawing on experiences in Africa and the Americas, "Conflict Prevention" concludes with reflections on the efforts and challenges of building regional capacity in the developing world.
