Book Description
The Senegalese author’s prize-winning novel explores brutality and resistance in a fictional North African city gripped by a fundamentalist regime. Under the regime of the so-called Brotherhood, two young people are publicly executed for having loved each other. In response, their mothers begin a secret correspondence, their only outlet for the grief they share. Spurred by The Brotherhood’s escalating brutality, a band of intellectuals seeks to foment rebellion by publishing an underground newspaper. Menawhile, the regime’s leader undertakes a personal crusade to find the responsible parties, and bring them to his own sense of justice. In Brotherhood, Mbougar Sarr explores how resistance and heroism can often give way to cowardice, all while giving voice to the personal struggles of each of his characters as they try to salvage the values they hold most dear. Winner of the French Voices Grand Prize, Prix Ahmadou Kourouma, and Grand Prix du Roman Métis

Book Description
When is a war a holy crusade? And when does theology cause Christians to condemn violence? In American Crusade, Benjamin Wetzel argues that the Civil War, the Spanish-American War, and World War I shared a cultural meaning for white Protestant ministers in the United States, who considered each conflict to be a modern-day crusade. American Crusade examines the "holy war" mentality prevalent between 1860 and 1920, juxtaposing mainline Protestant support for these wars with more hesitant religious voices: Catholics, German-speaking Lutherans, and African American Methodists. The specific theologies and social locations of these more marginal denominations made their ministries highly critical of the crusading mentality. Religious understandings of the nation, both in support of and opposed to armed conflict, played a major role in such ideological contestation. Wetzel's book questions traditional periodizations and suggests that these three wars should be understood as a unit. Grappling with the views of America's religious leaders, supplemented by those of ordinary people, American Crusade provides a fresh way of understanding the three major American wars of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.

Book Description
This electronic version has been made available under a Creative Commons (BY-NC-ND) open access license. Siblings are our longest lasting relationships. Narratives of the Great War abound with the war stories of brothers and sisters. Their emotional experiences span the novelty of departing for war or taking up war work, the turmoil of facing combat, the effort to provide ongoing support for family members, the ever-present anxiety for soldier-brothers, the depth of sibling grief and the multifarious ways surviving siblings sought to preserve the memory of their fallen brothers. This social and cultural history places siblinghood at the heart of our understanding of the war generation and how they balanced conflicting obligations to the nation, the military and their families. Drawing on a range of material, Brothers in the Great War, reveals how sibling bonds sustained fighting men and presents a novel insight into twentieth-century familial life.
