Book Description
This book is an account of a journey across central Iceland, from the northeast to the southwest, made in the summer of 1900 by a party of five men and one woman. The author and expedition leader, William Bisiker, was an English geographer associated with the Oxford School of Geography. The group included Arthur W. Hill, a noted botanist and later director of the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, and the geologist Herbert H. Thomas, later a noted paleobiologist and archaeologist. In addition to the overland journey, the book recounts a visit to the Faroe Islands, travels in western Iceland, and a journey by sea along the coast and into the fjords of the northwest, north, and east coasts of the island. It describes visits to isolated farms, small settlements, and churches, as well as rugged physical features including rivers of quicksand, long stretches of moraine, geysers, and various lava formations. A chapter on the capital of Reykjavik deals with the political structure of Iceland, at the time a dependency of Denmark, but which had been granted home rule that was exercised through the ancient Icelandic parliament, the Althing. The book, published in 1902, includes many photographs, four maps, and an appendix by Hill on plants collected in Iceland and the Faroes. Hill observed, among other things, that algae were found living in Iceland's hot springs at temperatures of up to 85° C. (185° F.).

Book Description
This book intends to cover cleft-related topics which are mainly focused on the current concept of balancing excellence in outcome and burden of cleft care. The wide spectrum of covered topics includes the understanding challenges and needs to deliver the modern surgical cleft care worldwide and comprehending multidisciplinary-based longitudinal life-changing concept. The chapters are focused on professional-friendly technical descriptions from diagnosis to execution such as nasoalveolar molding, cleft lip repair, cleft palate repair, myringotomy tube insertion, primary and secondary rhinoplasties, oronasal fistula reconstruction, velopharyngeal insufficiency management, virtual-aided alveolar reconstruction, surgery-first approach in cleft orthognathic surgery, 3D computer-assisted orthognathic surgery, revisionary surgeries, and postoperative care. Traditional and current principle-based methods are itemized into many algorithms and protocols to aid in diagnosing, planning, and selecting the best therapeutic approach in order to balance excellence in outcome and burden of care. Many surgical-, orthodontic-, speech-, and postoperative care-related technical examples, intraoperative photos, and full-colour illustrative drawings can guide the professionals working in multidisciplinary teams through each traditional and newer hybrid operative procedure in a detailed step-by-step fashion with emphasis on how to perform each procedure, rather than on theoretical-only descriptions. This book provides time- and scientifically-tested treatment algorithms to guide multidisciplinary teams during decision making process for each clinical scenario of the longitudinal cleft care

Book Description
Bionanotechnology is the key integrative technology of the 21st century and aims to use the knowledge, gathered from the natural construction of cellular systems, for the advancement of science and engineering. Investigating the topology and communication processes of cell parts can lead to invention of novel biological devices with exciting applications. Though microscale to nanoscale research offers an excellent space for the development of futuristic technologies, a number of challenges must be overcome. Due to paucity of a dedicated literature on the protein based nanodevices we bring you this monograph that combines collective research works of scientists probing into this fascinating universe of bionanotechnology. The monograph has been written with an aim of surveying engineering design principles of biomolecular nanodevices, prototype nanodevices based on redox proteins, bacteriorhodopsins and natural fibers, and touching upon the future developments in the field.

Book Description
Can Eden, the flood, and the Tower of Babel be real events that historians have simply renamed? Could Finnish and Norse, Hindu, Greek and Egyptian myth all be recording this same real history? Did Noah's generation surpass the agricultural, nuclear, and biotech technology of the twenty-first century? How did the ancients cut the multi-ton stones of the Egyptian pyramids and Incan walls, or melt Scottish forts? Did ancient China and Sumer know about the twin helix of DNA? Were successful human breeding experiments the origin of giants, while monsters like Grendel were the result of failures? What disaster occurred to them that caused the forgetting of all this knowledge? We know that comets captured by the sun's gravity break up into boulder streams that periodically intersect the Earth's orbit. Plato and the rabbis told us that repeating cosmic disasters have erased most of our history, leaving us only myth and Genesis. This book weaves the modern scientific evidence from Greenland ice cores, Mediterranean bathymetry, NASA archaeology, and human genetics with the linguistic insights of the Hebrew of Genesis 1-11 into a compelling narrative that we are only the second-most advanced civilization on planet Earth. For now.

Book Description
This volume contains the proceedings of the 45th Mosbach Colloquium of the German Society for Biological Chemistry (GBCh). The 1994 meeting was the first in this series devoted to the cytoskeleton. This complex system enables the eukaryotic cell to form discrete contacts with neighboring cells and the extracellular matrix, to differentiate, to move, change shape, transport organelles, and proliferate. These diverse tasks are performed by three distinct fibrillar networks: microfilaments, microtubules, and intermediate filaments, which are composed of structural and regulatory elements. The precise interplay between the components in time and space determines which of the various functions is performed. The rapid progress made in this field is best exemplified by the recent unraveling of the molecular mechanism of intracellular movement. Here, the modem microscopies of today allow the motility to be visualized in realtime. Molecular biology has dissected the functional domains of the motor proteins involved and provided material required for biochemical studies as well as structure analysis by X-ray diffraction and NMR. Thus, it is now possible to integrate cellular behavior and molecular structure in a unifying picture. Other recent advances in the field point to the role of cytoskeletol proteins in human diseases, from allergies to skin blistering, atrophies, and Alzheimers's disease. The book is an up-to-date account of the field told by an international set of experts, a broad introduction to newcomers, and a valuable reference for practitioners. January 1995 Brigitte M.
