Book Description
Excerpt from Cross Country Reminiscences Pleasant it is for a man whose hand has oftener grasped a hunting crop than a pen, to sit down and try to put a few notes on paper, of some of the good things he has had the luck to participate in, and indulge in some homely-printed chat - to coin an expression - of good horses and good men. Book Description
Excerpt from Cross-Country Techniques Illustrated Cross-country running goes as far back in the history of the human race as almost any activity we know. We can visualize the cave man run ning over the hills and plains in search of food or to safety from preying enemies. Mobility of ancient armies originally depended upon their ability to run with their weapons, and the first competition over hills and dales no doubt took place on an informal basis between the cave men or the ancient soldiers. The resourceful English were the first to place the sport of long distance running across the country on a highly competitive basis. In fact, the now famous crick run of Tom Brown's School Day: was first recorded as taking place about 1837. It is interesting to note that in England the first teams were fielded by the colleges, but they soon lost interest. Athletic clubs took over and pushed the sport to its current European popularity. In America, just the opposite took place. The clubs, such as the West chester Hares and Hounds Club and the New York American Athletic Harriers, were running over the hills in the 1870's. A Short time later, hundreds of clubs sprang up throughout the east on a recreational hares and hounds basis. While club athletes were enthusiastic about cross country running, the Officials who controlled the purse strings were not. Due to a lack of finances, club cross -country running began to disappear. Book Description
Excerpt from Sporting Reminiscences Lord granville gordon is anxious that this book should be prefaced with a statement of how it came to be Offered to the reading public, and in particular of how he was asked to write it in spite of his assurance that nothing that he could say would possibly have any interest for anybody but himself. In this' assumption he may or may not have been right, but the editor readily pleads guilty to the responsibility, believing as he does that the author's experiences on more or less trodden ground, and also his outspoken opinions on prominent sports and sportsmen, often fresh and always free from malice, may amuse. The book is not intended to instruct. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from Distance and Cross Country Running America's middle distance runners and sprinters are famous throughout the world. Her distance runners rank second only to the Englishmen, whose climate and general upbringing have made them peerless in this one branch of sport. These are the two salient points that strike one in glancing hastily down the vista Of American champions from 1876 to the present day. The American sprinter and quarter-miler are the best in the world to day, and they have been so ever since 1880, only four years after the first American championships were held. 'the half-milers have found their equals in England, though that famous Ameri can distance runner, Kilpatrick, holds the best half-mile record ever made. But in such men as Bredin, who defeated Kilpatrick in England; Workman Of Oxford, Cross, Tys'oe, the late world's champion, and numbers of others, our British cousins have shown an equality. Book Description
Excerpt from Reminiscences of an Athlete: Twenty Years on Track and Field I cannot remember the time when I was not interested in sport. There was no form of exercise which did not appeal to me, and this Whether I took part myself, or, as a mere spectator, applauded the performance of others. TO run fast or enduringly, to leap high or far, these had, for me, the savor of great deeds; and upon those who did them Worthily, I gazed with awe, as upon beings of a superior world. I am sure of the facts, yet when I look back and seek to find the reasons for them, I can scarcely seem to hit upon the cause. I was not reared in an athletic atmosphere; there were no family traditions to be maintained. It was, I think, simply a natural bent; the germ Of the athletic fever was in my blood. Stevenson has told us how he learned to write, not so much because he wished to be anauthor, although he wished that too, but principally, as it were, in a wager with him self. And thus my own ambition, though a far less noble one, was in kind the same. I wished to be an athlete, yet it was not for the sake of the medals or the glory, although, to borrow Stevenson's phrase, perhaps I wished that too. But my main incentive, like his, was a wager with myself. There was much that I aimed to acquire, yet it was not to excel others that I practised and trained; A certain standard of accomplishment, was always before me; and to know, in my own heart, that I had attained it that was my desire. Book Description
Excerpt from Reminiscences of the Course, the Camp, the Chase A country that has no history is said to be a happy one. A woman with a past does not consider it a subject of congratulation; Lucky man is, however, more fortunate, and may consider that a compliment lies hid in the request that he should write a history of his past life, since the scenes in which he has played his part may be supposed to contain sufficient interest to bear description for the amusement of others. There is another side of the question, however, which is scarcely so flattering, for such a request also implies that the active part of a man's life may be deemed to lie behind him, and that for the future he must be content to read of the achievements of younger men, instead Of sharing in them as in the days of yore.
