Book Description
Excerpt from Croquet Guide and Official Rules Governing the Game: As Adopted by the National American Croquet Association On the opposite page will be found the plan of a ground as adopted by the National Association, the dimensions of which are as follows: Length, 72 ft.; width, 36 ft.; corner pieces 8 ft. long, inside measurements, with a line denoting the boundary of the field 30 in. from the inside of the border. The stakes or post to be 1 in. in diameter and 11⁄2 in. high, situated outside of the above mentioned line at the centre of the width of the field. The first wicket to be 7 ft. from the stake; the second, 7 ft. from the first, on a line extending through the middle of the field; the side arches to be 6 ft.3 in. from the border, on a line with the second arch from each stake; the cage or double wicket in the centre to be 18 in. long and 33⁄8 in. between the wires, and set at right angles with a line drawn from stake to stake; the other eight arches to be 31⁄2 in. between the wires. The border, b, b, b, is best when made of some hard wood that will not warp, not smaller than 4x6 in., laid flat to serve as a cushion for carom shots; this timber or border should be beveled 1⁄2 in., making it measure 6 in. wide on top, 51⁄2 in. wide on the bottom and 4 inches high, which will prevent balls from jumping up or off the ground when used as a cushion. The boundary line, i, i, i, is simply a light line drawn 30 in. from or inside the border to indicate the boundary of the field (See Rule 38). This line can be easily made with a marker, having a small projecting nail point, drawn around the ground and held against the border, securing uniform distance. Book Description
In its early days in Victorian England croquet was a game for the wealthy but competition from other sports - most notably tennis - the onset of two world wars, and a century of social change forced the game to adapt. Modern croquet is an intricate game of strategy, played socially within clubs and competitively at national and international level. The object of the game - to guide two balls round a circuit of loops - has changed little over the years but tactically, croquet has become much more complex, elaborate and fascinating. Complete Croquet is a comprehensive guide for the aspiring and improving croquet player. It deals with the basic skills, and how to avoid and eradicate common problems, as well as providing an in-depth coverage of modern tactics. The author focuses on the building blocks of break play, examining in detail how each element works before bringing it all together. There is advice on how to repair a bad situation when everything has gone wrong, how to exploit a good situation when everything is going well, and how to regain the initiative when the opponent is storming ahead. Whether your interest is in developing an understanding of top-class, championship-level tactics, in improving your play at handicap level, or even in just playing at home and wanting to get a better understanding of the game, Complete Croquet will prove to be invaluable. Superbly illustrated with 195 colour photographs and diagrams.

Book Description
This official manual of the British Croquet Association dates from 1920, and includes several illustrations which help explain the rules and methodology behind this classic game. Variations of croquet date back to 17th century England, with the monarch Charles II said to have partook in an early incarnation of the game. The first descriptions resembling the modern game however appeared in Victorian times; it was in this period that croquet ascended to popularity, gaining appreciation as a tranquil yet engaging compliment to outdoor gatherings. By 1920, when this guidebook was published, croquet had swung in and out of fashion multiple times; nevertheless, its place in the recreational roster of Europeans and North Americans alike was clear. This book is intended as a handy reference for experienced players and beginners alike. It contains the essential instructions, measurements and laws of the game. The simplicity and flexibility of croquet is evident; it can be played upon garden or park lawns, at the beach, or upon grassy meadows. Yet while the game can be picked up with ease and its equipment is easy to assemble, this manual is clear that mastering play is a tough accomplishment.
