Book Description
Excerpt from Crops and Markets, Vol. 6: August 7, 1926 Movement started with a rush on July 23 and most shipments were completed in the first 10 days of the deal. The movement reached its peak about July 28 and shipments were expected to be practically completed by August 5. Total output for this section will hardly reach 200 cars, compared with 480 last year. Quality and flavor of the cantaloupes _w ere considerably above average. Practically all cars that were inspected at shipping point graded U. S. No. 1. A few fields ran heavily to large sizes and, in many -instances, the flat crates contained only nine melons. Prices received, for the most part, were not favorable, and the deal has shown very little profit to growers. Most cars were handled on a consignment basis, with an occasional cash buyer at loading point. The late spring and dry weather also held back tomatoes in southern Indiana, so that the express shipments started about two weeks later than usual. Car-lot movement began July 25, and by August 2 these shipments were discontinued because of the low prices received. Quality of the tomatoes was much poorer than usual due to deep growth cracks, and many cars ran heavily to smaller sizes. By August 2 about 25 cars moved from the Decker section, against 83 cars shipped last year. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from Crops and Markets, Vol. 5: April 10, 1926 Fed steers of value to sell at upward showed some activity early in the week and prices advanced from 25 to' particularly on weighty kinds suitable for eastern shipment. Later this advance was practically erased when shipping demand again departed. The instability of. The entire cattle trade indicated. A rather unhealthy condition, as not only lower grade steers but fat she stock that had recently been in broad demand met a sluggish outlet during the week and closed considerably lower. Most fed steers 'made 5 However, when the trade on better grade cattle was active, a few loads of well finished steers and yearlings sold at 5 and one load of weighty steers commanded the week's top of Price pounding tactics on the part of buyers served to widen the spread between fat she stock and steers and the upturn on better grade offerings served the same purpose in separating the prices on lower grade steers and the top of the steer contingent. Dragginess featured the trade on thin steers at all markets and price declines were general. Most stocker and feeder steers were going to the country at as the week closed, but the supply moving out even at these reduced rates was comparatively small. This decrease in the country demand was at least partially attributable to weather conditions. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Southern California shipments averaged 40 cars daily, with a total of 625 cars to May 22. Texas Yellow Bermudas generally Were jobbing lower in city: markets, at $1. 50 25 a crate. Arrivals from California ranged about 251: above Texas stock. Heavy receipts of Egyptian onions tended to keep down the price on domestic Bermudas. =about 120 carloads arrived from Egypt, some for reshipment. New Potatoes. - A recent report gives a preliminary estimate of the Commercial acreage of potatoes in eight second-early States as acres, which added to the previous report of 221, 670 in the early shipping sections indicates a total of 306, 920. The estimate for these eight States is 4, 500 acres less than last year and 7 000 to less than the three preceding y.ears Arkansas, . Missouri and Oklahoma are tending toward larger acreages but such sections as the Kearney district of Nebraska, the Eastern Shore. Of Maryland, and New Jersey have the 'lightest plantings. In five years. In. Fact, five years ago the Kearney section planted acres of potatoes and year by year has decreased this number until this season only 800' acres are expected. There is a general feeling in that section that potato raising is no longer a profitable industry. This, added to the high cost of seed, may account fer the. 50 reduction from the 1925 acreage.
