Trading was quiet despite the fact that there was some feeling that prices were close to bottom. Receipts showed increases and occasional lots of grass butter appeared. Movement into storage began in small way. Sentiment continued in favor of lower prices. Cheese markets followed an uncertain trend. Advances at the close of the week were not generally expected. Slight reduction in storage surplus over last year revealed by release of monthly cold storage report was regarded as favorable, but holdings are still considered heavy. Production is increasing. Excerpt from Crops and Markets, Vol. 1: March 15, 1924 The same general conditions which prevailed in the butter markets during the previous week continued during the first half of the week March 3 - 8. Operators for the most part lacked confidence, and supplies continued in excess of the demand so that by the middle of the week materially' lower price levels had been established on all of the markets. As the week progressed further, however, it became apparent that stocks no longer accumulated, and that the larger consumptive demand stimulated by the lower prices Was fully equal to the current receipts and in some instances enabled slight inroads into the accumulations. This brought _about a more confident tone and some speculative support and the market changed almost over night from being decidedly weak to steady with some support from the speculative elements as well as from those receivers who at the existing price levels stood to lose heavily on high cost goods previously received. Excerpt from Crops and Markets, Vol. 1: July 1924 The acreage planted to potatoes has been materially ia creased in New England, New York, and in most of the early States, but has been materially reduced in the northern States from Ohio west to the Dakotas. This leaves a net decrease in acreage of nearly 2 70. So far, prospects for yield are about average. The acreage of sweet potatoes shows a, very slight reduction from last year, due chiefly to unfavorable weather. The crop is stili being planted in some sections and the total acreage is somewhat uncertain. The outlook for apples on July 1 is for about as many bushels as were produced last year. The crop is, however, distributed quite differently, prospects being very good in the eastern States, fair in the Mississippi Valley, and unusually poor on the Pacific Coast.
