The Kinkaid Area Assessment, part of a series of statewide regional assessments, examines 629 square miles, most of which falls within three counties-- Jackson, Perry, and Washington, in southern Illinois. The area falls within four natural divisions-- Southern Till Plain, Shawnee Hills, Ozark, and Lower Mississippi River Bottomlands. More than 90% of the assessment area, 574 square miles, lies within the Beaucoup Creek watershed. Beaucoup Creek originates in eastern Washington County and flows southward for about 81 miles to its confluence with the Big Muddy River in Jackson County. Kinkaid Creek has its headwaters in the northwestern portion of Jackson County and flows southeast until it meets the Big Muddy near Grimsby. Kinkaid Lake, formed when Kinkaid Creek was impounded about 30 years ago, is located in Jackson County. The report provides information on the natural and human resources of the area as a basis for managing and improving its ecosystems. The development of ecosystems-based information and management programs in Illinois are the result of three processes-- the Critical Trents Assessment Program, Conservation Congress, and Water Resources and Land Use Priorities Task Force.

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) established the National Water Quality Assesment (NAWQA) program in 1985 to assess water quality conditions and trends in representative river basins and aquifers across the United States. The U.S. Climate Change Science Program (CCSP), established in 2002 to coordinate climate and global change research conducted in the United States and to support decision-making on climate-related issues, is producing twenty-one synthesis and assessment reports that address its research, observation, and decision-support needs. The first report, produced by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) in coordination with other agencies, focuses on understanding reported differences between independently produced data sets of temperature trends for the surface through the lower stratosphere and comparing these data sets to model simulations. To ensure credibility and quality, NOAA asked the National Research Council to conduct an independent review of the report. The committee concluded that the report Temperature Trends in the Lower Atmosphere: Understanding and Reconciling Differences is a good first draft that covers an appropriate range of issues, but that it could be strengthened in a number of ways.

"In Wide Rivers Crossed, Ellen Wohl tells the stories of two rivers—the South Platte on the western plains and the Illinois on the eastern—to represent the environmental history and historical transformation of major rivers across the American prairie. Wohl begins with the rivers’ natural histories, including their geologic history, physical characteristics, ecological communities, and earliest human impacts, and follows a downstream and historical progression from the use of the rivers’ resources by European immigrants through increasing population density of the twentieth century to the present day. The environmental changes in the South Platte and the Illinois reflect the relentless efforts by humans to control the distribution of water: to enhance surface water in the arid western prairie and to limit the spread of floods and drain the wetlands along the rivers in the water-abundant east. In addition, during the past two centuries crops replaced native vegetation; excess snowmelt and rainfall carried fertilizers and pesticides into streams; and levees, dams, and drainage altered distribution. These changes cascaded through networks, starting in small headwater tributaries, and reduced the ability of rivers to supply the clean water, fertile soil, and natural habitats they had provided for centuries. Understanding how these rivers, and rivers in general, function and how these functions have been altered over time will allow us to find innovative approaches to restoring river ecosystems. Wide Rivers Crossed looks at these historical changes and discusses opportunities for much needed protection and restoration for the future."
