En efecto: los textos que siguen de María Luisa Oliveres, que aparecieron a lo largo de los años en uno de los diarios principales de España, no se publicaron en las páginas de opinión, sino en la página dedicada a temas religiosos. Pero en ellos se habla de la vida: de cosas como la inmigración, los palestinos, la utopía de la historia humana, el PNUD, la libertad para salir del propio cenáculo, el economista Stiglitz o los pobres, las guerras, el cuidado, el dolor del mundo o la aceptación de la diversidad... Es decir: se habla de lo que le importa a Dios, no de los que interesa a los guardianes de la institución u “oficiales” de la Iglesia, a los que parece que sólo interesa la vida intrauterina y la del más allá. Aquí la pasión creyente y el sentido de la gratuidad llevan a esta importante advertencia: no basta defender causas nobles por muy nobles que sean; además hay que defenderlas noblemente. De modo que, si la separación entre fe y vida afectaba a los creyentes, esta otra observación vale para todos, sea cual sea la cosmovisión que profesen; y ella misma ya es un acto de fe.

During World War II, agents of the Special Operations Executive (SOE) infiltrated Japanese-occupied Malaya. There they worked with Malayan guerrilla groups, including the communist-sponsored Malayan Peoples Anti-Japanese Army (MPAJA), regarded as the precursor of the communist insurgent army of the Malayan Emergency. This book traces the development of SOE's Malayan operations, and analyses the interactions between SOE and the various guerrilla groups. It explores the reasons for and the extent of Malay disillusionment with Japanese rule, and demonstrates how guerrilla service acted as a training ground for some later Malay leaders of the independent nation. However, the reports written about the MPAJA by SOE operatives just after the war failed to draw out the likely future threat posed by the communists to the returning colonial administration. Rebecca Kenneison shows that the British possessed a wealth of local information, but failed to convert it into active intelligence in the period prior to the Malayan Emergency. In doing so she provides new insights into the impact of SOE on Malayan politics, the nature of Malayan communism's challenge to colonial rule, and British post-war intelligence in Malaya.

Palaeomagnetism and archaeomagnetism are fascinating specialized studies because they are applicable to such a wide range of problems in geology, archaeology and geophysics. They can also be undertaken cheaply, when compared with most other geophysical techniques, and, at first sight, simply. In fact, real comprehension of the magnetic processes that have occurred in rocks and other types of material over several thousands or many millions of years is still extremely difficult to assess and measure. On this basis, this book cannot explain all such features, nor can it attempt to cover all the actual and potential applications of the method. All that can be attempted is to give an impression of the ways in which such techniques can be used in a wide variety of fields, and how these techniques are usually applied. The magnetization of rocks is, in fact, one of the earliest of the true sciences, but we are still not in a position to answer many of the problems posed. Consequently some of the examples given of applications are, essentially, state-of-the-art comments, rather than being a review as such. The changing position of the geomagnetic poles with time is still not adequately defined, for example, and some of the more recent conventional views are given, although the emphasis is placed on more subjective, probably more controversial, evaluations.
