A tested, proven way to foster imaginative and story-based activities among diverse groups and families, especially caretakers of loved ones and those suffering from dementia and Alzheimer's, from pioneering researcher Anne Basting, the author of Creative Care and a MacArthur Genius Grant recipient. Based on Basting's twenty-five years of research, this "imagination kit" makes it easy for families, friends, and caregivers to make meaningful connections with elders and others dealing with physical, cognitive, or emotional challenges, including memory loss. The Creative Care Imagination Kit contains: 15 cards of Beautiful Questions/Thoughtful Actions: Each card poses one "Beautiful Question" on the front side, a question that fosters conversation without relying on the quality of one's memory or knowledge. The flip side includes follow-up questions or instructions to maximize the fun and build deeper bonds through thoughtful actions. 15 cards of Story Prompts: Each card features a picture to jumpstart a group story-creation exercise. The Imagination Kit Journal: A notebook with a letter of introduction from Basting, instructions, and spaces to record sessions as a keepsake. The Creative Care Imagination Kit sparks conversation and encourages active listening, allowing all ages to freely share ideas and stories without worrying about getting the details "correct." Basting's years of research have shown that these practices stimulate the brain and awaken the imagination, adding wonder and awe not only to the daily lives of those with dementia but to all family members, and provides them with a means of connection and communication. A simply joyful way for families and groups to play together, The Creative Care Imagination Kit invites users to shift from the expectation of memory to the freedom of imagination.

Book Description
Arts in Healthy Aging examines public policies and professional practices that effectively use the arts to support health and well-being outcomes in older adults. It offers a comprehensive study of why and how purposefully-designed programs that engage the visual, performing, and literary arts can support the health and well-being of older adults. The authors argue that it is the right time for the American arts and aging movement to restructure itself as a national network and advocacy coalition across four domains: the arts, health, aging, and lifelong learning. Building on decades of published research, government documents, and program models, this scholarly volume provides historical perspectives, new theoretical approaches, analytical models, resources for researchers and practitioners, and pathways forward for advancing the interdisciplinary arts in healthy aging field of scholarship and practice. Although focused on the United States, the discussion of policies and practices is relevant and applicable to other countries as appropriate to their specific contexts.

Book Description
Providing a critical humanities approach to ageing, this book addresses new directions in age studies: the meaning and workings of "ageism" in the twenty-first century, the vexed relationship between age and disability studies, the meanings and experiences of "queer" aging; the fascinating, yet often elided work of age activists; and, finally, the challenges posed by AI and, more generally, transhumanism in the context of caring for an ageing population. Divided into four parts: Part I: What Does It Mean to Grow Old? Part II: Aging: Old Age and Disability Part III: Aging, Old Age, and Activism Part IV: Old Age and Humanistic Approaches to Care the volume provides an innovative, two-part structure that facilitates rather than merely encourages interdisciplinary collaboration across the humanities and social sciences. Each essay is thus followed by two short critical responses from disciplinary viewpoints that diverge from that of the essay’s author. Drawing on work from across the humanities - philosophy, fine arts, religion, and literature, this book will be a useful supplemental text for courses on age studies, sociology and gerontology at both undergraduate and graduate levels.

Book Description
The Intellectual Imagination unfolds a sweeping vision of the form, meaning, and value of intellectual practice. The book breaks new ground in offering a comprehensive vision of the intellectual vocation. Omedi Ochieng argues that robust and rigorous thought about the form and contours of intellectual practices is best envisioned in light of a comprehensive critical contextual ontology—that is, a systematic account of the context, forms, and dimensions in and through which knowledge and aesthetic practices are created, embodied, translated, and learned. Such an ontology not only accounts for the embeddedness of intellectual practices in the deep structures of politics, economics, and culture, but also in turn demonstrates the constitutive power of critical inquiry. It is against this background that Ochieng unfolds a multidimensional and capacious theory of knowledge and aesthetics. In a critique of the oppositional binaries that now reign in the modern and postmodern academy—binaries that pit fact versus value, science versus the humanities, knowledge versus aesthetics—Ochieng argues for the inextricable intertwinement of reason, interpretation, and the imagination. The book offers a close and deep reading of North Atlantic and African philosophers, thereby illuminating the resonances and contrasts between diverse intellectual traditions. The upshot is an incisively rich, layered, and textured reading of the archetypal intellectual styles and aesthetic forms that have fired the imagination of intellectuals across the globe. Ochieng’s book is a radical summons to a practice and an imagination of the intellectual life as the realization of good societies and good lives.
