Cultural sustainability is a very important aspect of the overall sustainability framework and is regarded as the fourth pillar alongside the other three: environmental, economic, and social sustainability. However, the concept is neither fully explored, nor widely accepted or recognized. This book elicits the interplay of nature-culture-architecture and theorizes the concept of cultural sustainability and culturally sustainable architecture. It identifies four key themes in Chinese philosophy: Harmony with Heaven, Harmony with Earth, Harmony with Humans, and Harmony with Self, along with Greek philosopher Aristotle’s physics: form, space, matter, and time, it sets them as criteria to evaluate the renewed and new courtyard housing projects constructed in China since the 1990s. Using an innovative architectural and social science approach, this book examines the political, economic, social, and spatial factors that affect cultural sustainability. Supported by a multiplicity of data including: field surveys, interviews with residents, architects, and planners, time diaries, drawings, photos, planning documents, observation notes, and real estate brochures, the book proposes new courtyard garden house design strategies that promote healthy communities and human care for one another, a concept that is universally applicable. This research is an in-depth investigation of the renewed/new courtyard housing built in the Chinese cities of Beijing and Suzhou since the 1990s. The study explores the architectural, environmental, spatial, constructional, social, cultural, and behavioral aspects of the housing, to see whether it is culturally sustainable, and whether it facilitates residents' traditional cultural expressions. The theorization of cultural sustainability and culturally sustainable architecture in the Chinese context forms the theoretical contribution. The theorization of cultural sustainability relied mainly on literature review of the four pillars of sustainable development: environmental responsibility, economic viability, social equity, and cultural vitality. The theorization of culturally sustainable architecture is by linking core concepts in Chinese philosophy: harmony with heaven, harmony with earth, harmony with humans, and harmony with self, with form, space, matter, and time, in an attempt to connect architecture to social science. The study is based on data collected through a number of research methods, including field surveys, interviews, time diaries, architectural drawings, photographs, planning documents, conversation and observation notes, journals, real estate magazines, brochures, and related material, to achieve a comprehensive and holistic research method. The findings suggest that communal courtyards foster social interaction and private courtyards facilitate self-cultivation. Neighborly relations are partly influenced by the form and space of the courtyard housing, and partly by a changing and polarizing society, socio-economic differences, housing tenure, modern lifestyles, community involvement, common language, cultural awareness, and the cultural background of the residents. The communal courtyards help sustain some traditional Chinese cultural activities. The primary function of a communal courtyard is to maintain health/natural healing. However, many cultural activities are much less or no longer partaken in the communal courtyards, likely due to such factors as time, climate, courtyard ownership, yard size, facilities, and so on. Moreover, community/city parks/gardens have become important places for cultural activities in China.

This paper looks at the courtyard house as a traditional urban dwelling of yesteryears with a view to exploring its potential in informing the housing developments of the future. In order to address the question, the paper starts with a historical overview of this built form as an urban dwelling that fulfilled its functional and spatial requirements in times gone by. It then goes on to highlight the inadequacy of postcolonial housing solutions in Algeria and to look into two important aspects of this traditional housing typology; its socio-cultural relevance and environmental performance. The analysis is carried out using both secondary research in the form of three examples from the literature. and primary research carried out as fieldwork in the form of temperature measurements inside a house, during the hot season, in Boussaada (Algeria). The discussion and concluding remarks attempts to make an argument for re-considering what could be learned from such traditional housing typology to inform future urban development that would subscribe to the values of sustainable development.

My inspiration towards working on housing living community emerged from the environment where I grew up in Bangladesh. I lived in a neighborhood where people avoided community places and lived alone. Housing affects both the material and immaterial aspects of urban life, hence it's vital in deciding quality of life. After moving to the U.S., I noticed a lack of community gatherings in housing where I live. Community housing provides an opportunity for some to live a happier life along with other people by sharing common spaces in dwelling and community spaces. Although problems may never be completely avoided, as contrast to the isolated environment of a more conventional neighborhood. Co-living establishes a sense of community through communal kitchens, living areas, and backyards, yet each resident lives in a fully equipped apartment. Community spaces in housing's effects on physical and mental health, as well as quality of life and wellbeing, have been examined in certain papers. (Carrere, J., 2020) However, these articles have not properly analyzed the relation of community gathering spaces and the domestic spaces and also the residents’ behavior towards those spaces. The focus of my thesis is to encourage communal living through the exploration of courtyard housing. My preliminary research included precedent analysis and literature review on the community living and housing design projects to establish a baseline of best practices to alleviate social isolation and loneliness. From the precedent analysis the idea of housing community areas design and the housing units’ development will be introduced. My paper will use courtyard patterns to illustrate the relationship between community spaces and residents of co-housing not only horizontally and but also vertically to reduce the mental health issue of people living there. So, my argument is not only the common shared spaces (kitchen, dining, communal hall) can bring people together but also different scaled multi-level courtyards can make the neighborhood lively and happy. I will explore these topics through housing districts in Manhattan, New York, developed during the modernist era. A thorough investigation of the urban grid, open spaces, roadways, and the connectivity of the housing area with the communal spaces will be done at the site, which was selected from the New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA). These investigations would be useful in identifying the housing shortage in Manhattan's East Harlem neighborhood. As a result, these analyses will continue to constitute a rich part of the design intervention of this project.
