Book Description
Most people visit the Sunshine State for its theme parks and beaches, but there is another side to Florida, an underbelly few tourists ever see, a periphery most residents know about but--out of decorum or discomfort--prefer not to discuss. In Fringe Florida, Lynn Waddell explores the frequently exotic, often sensational, and sometimes illicit worlds of the oddest state in the nation. Waddell takes the reader on a colorful journey to meet the most unconventional of Floridians in unbelievable and spectacular places. At Fetish Con, she befriends furries and pony girls. She travels to Cassadaga, the oldest active Spiritualist community in the South, where trained mediums converse with the dead, and to the Holy Land Experience theme park in Orlando, where one can eat a hot dog while watching a reenactment of the Crucifixion. She interviews the founder of the Leather & Lace Motorcycle Club, a Daytona Beach-area grandmother who hosts the club's annual gathering at her subdivision home where scores of lady bikers camp out on her lawn. At an Animal Amnesty Day outside Busch Gardens, Waddell meets exotic reptile owners who give up their beloved-but no-longer-manageable pets and others who vie to take home the cast-offs. If you've ever wanted to parade around on a pimped-out swamp buggy amidst a couple thousand beer-swigging mud boggers or fall asleep with a python hissing in your ear, been tempted to bring a Capuchin monkey in a stroller to a Little League game, or contemplated sitting on the beach waiting to be picked up by a UFO but couldn’t quite bring yourself to such extremes, Fringe Florida is for you.

Book Description
This picaresque novel owes much to Cervantes, Fielding, and Bellow, with a certain nod to Dostoevsky and Franzen. We meet the main character as a young successful adult and follow him into friendships and situations that are amusing, crushing, and even criminal. We follow his hilarious and fateful paths through multiple French trips, including a pig hunt in Perigord. Paris, Nice, Monaco, and Val d'Isere are richly explored. In Mexican trips, he is trapped in Mayan sexual rites, climbs Orizaba, and almost dies at sea in a Pacific storm. His formative life is recounted, including events which warp forever his relationship with women. His psychic state permits sex with Greek goddesses and to receive stunning predictions from Apollo. Finally, he is led to Hades by the goddess Juno, a lover, and tried by King Minos for the crimes of rape and murder. Persephone prosecutes and Pluto defends. A jury of prominent dead is selected. One witness, Hitler's ghost, describes the event that triggered his order to exterminate the Jews, offered in evidence by Pluto as a counterpoint in magnitude to Rory’s crimes. Rory denies guilt as the trial ends. Memory and imagination grow from the soil of the author’s brain and by definition are autochthonic. Could you say that the fiction that fiction is fiction is not fiction?

Book Description
Millions of parents of teenagers everywhere are desperate to know: how do I get my irrefutably average child a spot at a top college, one that will ensure him years of cocktail party one-upmanship, a respectable portion of debt, and lots of huge car-window decals? In this hilarious spoof on college-admissions guidebooks, Charles Monagan injects warmhearted humor into that American rite of passage: trying to get your lazy, not-as-smart-as-he-thinks-he-is, not-as-original-as-she-thinks-she-is teenagers into a fancy overpriced school with a big name so that they can eventually get a job and move out of your basement. From preconception strategies to the farce that is community service, Monagan's theories and suggestions are so outrageous they just might work. Monagan's unorthodox techniques and manufactured wisdom include gems like: --Marry your child's college counselor --Proactively name your child (Rockefeller? Elihu?) --Buying the SATs

Book Description
Robert’s father is in the late stages of dementia, in need of near-constant care. When his girlfriend’s caregiver fatigue gets the better of her, she leaves him all alone in the world—except for his son. But while he’s living in a trailer in Florida, Rob’s in a one-room studio apartment in Montreal. And, as of today, after a run-in with a bunch of TSA agents with no patience for a frightened old man and a failure to understand the word “dementia” ... he is now on the no-fly list. And then there’s Rob. Ex-husband (the “ex” is a recent addition) and father (when he can get his children to even look at him). He’s a real estate agent who lives in a cracker box and who lost his top-earner status when he started drinking after the divorce. He’s pretty much alone in the world, too, when it comes down to it, except for a father who’s a lot more pleasant to him now that he has no idea who Rob is. Dad is now Rob’s responsibility; they’ve just got to get him to Montreal. But a quick and easy flight isn’t an option... His father’s ancient car could probably get them home—if Rob can manage to plan and execute a road trip across most of the States, make it to payday without his child support cheque bouncing, keep his father safe, and figure out what the hell he’s supposed to do with him when they get back. Oh, and not get fired in the attempt. It’s going to be a long drive.
