Book Description
This book embraces the entire range of problems associated with phase equilibria in “tungsten – carbon” binary system and related ternary systems, nonstoichiometry, disorder and order in different tungsten carbides, electronic and crystal structure of these carbides. The main application of tungsten carbides is constituent in hardmetals for cutting tools. In the last 20 years, the most active efforts were made in synthesis and application of nanocrystalline tungsten carbide for the production of nanostructured hardmetals. The present book describes in detail different methods for production of nanocrystalline tungsten carbide. The peculiarities of sintering of Co hardmetals from nanocrystalline powders having different particle sizes are discussed. Materials scientists using tungsten carbide to create novel superhard and tough materials will find this book particularly useful.

Book Description
This voLume continues the description of the physicaL properties of tungsten metaL and covers specificaLLy surface properties, eLectron emission, and fieLd evaporation. Tungsten surfaces are probabLy the most extensiveLy studied metaL surfaces. RecentLy, experimentaLists and theorists have focused their interest on the atomic structure, Lattice dynamics, and eLectronic properties of the W(100) surface. WhiLe the structure of the recon structed Low-temperature surface is weLL estabLished, there are still unresoLved probLems concerning the structure at and above room temperature, the nature of the phase transition, and the driving force for the reconstruction. Other Low-index tungsten surfaces have been studied in much Less detail. There are numerous and partLy confLicting data on the surface energy, the seit-diffusion parameters, and the work function of singLe-crystaL and poLycrystaL tungsten surfaces. ELec tron emission, which is of fundamentaL importance for many appLications, comprises therm ionic, fieLd, photofieLd, and photoeLectric emission as weLL as emission induced by impinging eLectrons, atoms, or ions. Pioneering work in areas Like thermionic or fieLd emission is comprehensiveLy discussed. Very recent studies of vaLence-band and core-LeveL spectra moreover provide detaiLed information on intrinsic surface properties. FieLd evaporation phenomena are treated at the end of this voLume. Book Description
This definitive work is the most uptodate compendium on tungsten in over twenty years. Wolf-Dieter Schubert's scientific career and extensive research activities combined with Erik Lassner's long-term industrial and development knowledge make this an essential resource on the current status of tungsten science and technology. Consolidating new knowledge previously presented at seminars or in the technical press, Tungsten is a significant contribution to the broader acceptance of the most recent innovations in the field. The text is enhanced by over 300 illustrations.
