Book Description
Excerpt from Corneille and Racine For the greater part of the translations in the present volume the writer is responsible. Save in a few passages in the "Cid," where the version in the measure of the original, has been supplied by a friend, he has thought it better to render the meaning of the French verses into English prose than to attempt verses of his own. He is not aware of any English translation into verse of the plays of Corneille which would be endured now, even by the most patient reader. The best, perhaps, is Ambrose Philip's English version of Racine's "Andromaque," known under the title of "The Distressed Mother," which must have found admirers in London during the last century; for many editions of it were printed, and it was several times performed upon our stage. The translations of the choruses in "Athalie," by Randolph and Knight, will be acknowledged in their proper place. Book Description
Excerpt from Corneille and Racine in England; A Study of the English Translations of the Two Corneilles and Racine, With Especial Reference: To Their Presentation on the English Stage The collection of translations has been car ried down to the end of the first quarter of the nineteenth century only, as after that time all the English versions were merely literary exercises. The motive prompting the work had completely changed. English renderings of foreign masterpieces may be said to be sin cere translations only when the motive of the translator is to make it possible for the gen eral public, reading no language but English, to know the foreign work in as perfect an English reproduction as he can make. When he produces his work with no such idea, but addresses himself to a small circle who know both languages and can make comparisons, meaning to exhibit his dexterity in manu facturing English verse out of French, he is performing a literary tour de force only, and his production has nothing in common with the sincere translation which forms the material studied here. Book Description
Excerpt from Corneille This picture illustrates among other things how fashionable the drama had become. We are in the centre of the great social world, and that world. Is absorbed in the stage. Whatever the play may be, one thing is certain, it is the work of some poet approved of society. This theatre of the Palais Cardinal, with its pomp and magnifi cence, offers a striking contrast to the theatre of Hotel de Bourgogne as the historians describe it. Book Description
Excerpt from Andromaque Racine's literary attributes are those of a realist. His work is realistic. He represents the objective method of looking at life, rather than the subjective. Corneille was a man of general ideas, given up to the discussion of principles, a romanticist. Racine specializes, studies de finite characteristics, analyzes. It was the attitude of his generation. The observers of his day would class him with Moliere as natural. For this reason his plays are more simple and logical, more compact than those of Cor neille. In his analysis of character he is searching for the influence of some passion, generally love or its 0& spring, jealousy, hatred, occasionally ambition, first on the human heart and through it on the overt acts of the ia. Book Description
Excerpt from Continental Drama, Vol. 26: Calderon, Corneille, Racine, Moliere, Lessing, Schiller; With Introductions and Notes Splitting the crags of God as it retires; But sparing still what it should only blast, This guilty piece of human handiwork, And all that are within it. Oh, how oft, How oft, within or here abroad, have I Waited. And in the whisper of my heart Pray'd for the slanting hand of heaven to strike The blow myself I dared not, out of fear Of that Hereafter. Worse, they say, than here, Plunged headlong in, but. Till dismissal waited, To wipe at last all sorrow from men's eyes, And make this heavy dispensation clear. Thus have I borne till now, and still endure, Crouching in sullen impotence day by day, Till some such out-burst of the elements Like this rouses the sleeping fire within; And sanding thus upon the threshold of Another night about to close the door Upon one wretched day to Open it On one yet wretcheder because one more, Once more, you savage heavens, I ask of you I, looking up to those relentless eyes That. Now the greater lamp is gone below. Begin to muster in the listening skies; In all the shining circuits you have gone About this theatre of human woe, What greater sorrow have you gazed upon Than down this narrow Chink you witness still And which, did you yourselves not fore-devise. You registered for others to fulfil! Fin. This is some Laureate at a birthday ode No wonder we went rhyming.
