Author: Louis Catlett
Publisher: RAND Corporation
ISBN:
Category : Nature
Languages : en
Pages : 120
Book Description
The first in a four-volume study to assist the Netherlands government in a policy analysis of alternative control strategies for operating the storm-surge barrier across the Oosterschelde basin. For each alternative, the project analyzed several consequences or "impacts," including the safety of the dikes along the Oosterschelde; the effects on the ecology and the shellfish and fishing industries of the region; the impacts on water management and shipping in the basin; and the implications for the design of the barrier and its control system. This volume describes the approach and summarizes the results of the complete analysis. It first presents an analysis of hydraulic conditions and closure frequency, then describes the rationale for selecting three alternative strategies for detailed evaluation, and finally illustrates the impacts of the strategies, category by category, through the use of a matrix display device--a colored scorecard.

Goods and Services of Marine Bivalves
Author: Aad C. Smaal
Publisher: Springer
ISBN: 3319967762
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 598
Book Description
The aim of this open access book is to review and analyse the goods and services of bivalve shellfish. How they are defined, what determines the ecological functions that are the basis for the goods and services, what controversies in the use of goods and services exist, and what is needed for sustainable exploitation of bivalves from the perspective of the various stakeholders. The book is focused on the goods and services, and not on impacts of shellfish aquaculture on the benthic environment, or on threats like biotoxins; neither is it a shellfish culture handbook although it can be used in evaluating shellfish culture. The reviews and analysis are based on case studies that exemplify the concept, and show the strengths and weaknesses of the current applications. The multi-authored reviews cover ecological, economic and social aspects of bivalve goods and services. The book provides new insights for scientists, students, shellfish producers, policy advisors, nature conservationists and decision makers. This book is open access under the CC BY license.

Aquatic Ecosystems
Author: Nicholas V. C. Polunin
Publisher: Cambridge University Press
ISBN: 1316175731
Category : Nature
Languages : en
Pages : 941
Book Description
Concern about future supplies of fresh water to society, to meet the full range of human needs, now comes very high on the priority list of global societal issues. An overarching issue, which this book addresses, is whether global climate change is a dominant driver of change in the structure and function of all natural water-based ecosystems, or whether direct human population growth and accelerated consumption are playing an equal or greater role. This book divides the whole aquatic realm into 21 ecosystems, from those on land (both saline and fresh water) to those of the open and deep oceans. It draws on the understanding of leading ecologists to summarize the state and likely condition by the year 2025 of each of the ecosystems. Written for academic researchers and environmental professionals, the aim is to put the climate change debate into a broader context as a basis for conservation science and planning.

The Oosterschelde Estuary (The Netherlands): a Case-Study of a Changing Ecosystem
Author: P.H. Nienhuis
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 940111174X
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 605
Book Description
The Oosterschelde estuary is one of the estuaries in the Netherlands which remained after the Delta scheme was completed in 1986. In the seventies the Oosterschelde became a national symbol of the change in political thinking and decision making about the values of our natural environment. As a result of political decision a storm surge barrier was built in the mouth of the estuary, as a compromise between safety for the human population and nature conservation. Owing to the broad interest in the meaning of the Oosterschelde estuary for Dutch and international societies, it became one of the most intensively studied coastal ecosystems in Western Europe. In an interdisciplinary approach of several state agencies and universities, a broad spectrum of physical, chemical and biological research has been carried out during the period of 1980--1989, dedicated to the structure and functioning of the saline ecosystem. The undisturbed estuary was studied during the period between 1980--1984. Large mathematical models had been constructed before 1986, to simulate future changes in the ecosystem. Further studies after the completion of the storm surge barrier (1986--1989) have been used for verification of the model. The integrated and summarized knowledge of the Oosterschelde ecosystem is used by water managers and nature and fisheries conservationists. A case study for professional civil engineers, ecologists, marine biologists, water managers, decision makers, university students and anyone interested in physical, chemical and biological estuarine and coastal sciences.
