Book Description
Geometric constraint programming increases flexibility in CAD design specifications and leads to new conceptual design paradigms. This volume features a collection of work by leading researchers developing the various aspects of constraint-based product modeling. In an introductory chapter the role of constraints in CAD systems of the future and their implications for the STEP data exchange format are discussed. The main part of the book deals with the application of constraints to conceptual and collaborative design, as well as state-of-the-art mathematical and algorithmic methods for constraint solving.

Book Description
Solving Geometric Constraints records and explains the formal basis for graphical analysis techniques that have been used for decades in engineering disciplines. It describes a novel computer implementation of a 3D graphical analysis method - degrees of freedom analysis - for solving geometric constraint problems of the type encountered in the kinematic analysis of mechanical linkages, providing the best computational bounds yet achieved for this class of problems. The technique allows for the design of algorithms that provide significant speed increases and. will foster the development of interactive software tools for the simulation, optimization, and design of complex mechanical devices as well as provide leverage in other geometric domains.Kramer formalizes symbolic geometry, including explicit reasoning about degrees of freedom, as an alternative to symbolic algebraic or iterative numerical techniques for solving geometric constraint satisfaction problems. He discusses both the theoretical and practical advantages of degrees of freedom analysis, including a correctness proof of the procedure, and clearly defines its scope. He covers all nondegenerate cases and handles several classes of degeneracy, giving examples that are practical and of representative complexity. Glenn A. Kramer is Research Scientist at the Schlumberger Laboratory for Computer Science.

Book Description
SMC COLOMBIER FONTAINE is a company in the AFE METAL group, which uses a sand casting process to manufacture steel primary parts. To reduce the "time to market", primary part producers need to reduce the time and cost of the industrialisation process. These factors, in addition to the global goal of improving process performance levels, brought SMC to develop numerical technologies and traceability from quotation to part delivery [1]. Nowadays, these improvements are incorporated into company culture. The next step in reducing the time and cost of the production process is to introduce a complete methodology of use and experience feedback of these new models and methods. To be able to generalise this approach, a CAD methodology is essential and thus becomes a step in the industrialisation process. The amount of improvements engendered by the numerical technologies largely justifies the time investment made to obtain a numerical definition of all the different elements in the sand casting process [2]. The objective of our approach is to optimise the product and its production process by generating a complete numerical reference, through the integration of quotation, CAD, simulation, new manufacturing technologies and effective production processes.

Book Description
It is vital that today’s engineers work with computer-based tools and techniques. However, programming courses do not provide engineering students with the skills that are necessary to succeed in their professional career. Here, the authors propose a novel, practical approach that encompasses knowledge assimilation, decision-making capabilities and technical agility, together with concepts in computer-aided engineering that are independent of hardware and software technologies. This book: Outlines general concepts such as fundamental logic, definition of engineering tasks and computational complexity Covers numerous representation frameworks and reasoning strategies such as databases, objects, constraints, knowledge systems, search and optimisation, scientific computation and machine learning Features visualization and distribution of engineering information Presents a range of IT topics that are relevant to all branches of engineering Offers many practical engineering examples and exercises Fundamentals of Computer Aided Engineering provides support for all students involved in computer-aided engineering courses in civil, mechanical, chemical and environmental engineering. This book is also a useful reference for researchers, practising engineers using CAE and educators who wish to increase their knowledge of fundamental concepts.
