Within the scope of today’s globalisation, linguistic diversity is a given fact of the world we live in. In several educational contexts in Europe, language awareness (LA) activities have been introduced with the objective to prepare pupils cognitively, socially and/or critically for life as multilingual, open minded and/or empowered citizens in a diverse world. Despite previous research in various contexts, the concept of LA remains problematic: a generally accepted, evidence-based conceptualisation is missing. This confronts both research and education with a challenge: in order to develop LA activities, implement them successfully in educational contexts and achieve the expected outcomes, we should know what the concept stands for, how it works and why we would choose to implement it in classrooms (or not). The present research aims at illustrating the newcomer’s process of becoming an ‘emergent plurilingual’ member of a heterogeneous and multilingual primary school classroom in Luxembourg. It is a 8 month case study about a child belonging to one of the ethnic and linguistic communities most affected by school failure in Luxembourg, namely ‘Romanophones’ or romance-language speaking students. The country of Luxembourg has three official languages and a great diversity, both factors demanding a unique educational system. The Luxembourgish educational system is then confronted with the common practice of trilingualism and a high proportion of foreigners in its classrooms. A detailed analysis of the actors in contact with this child, including the different teachers, parents, and peers, allows for an observation of which practices are legitimated and which ones are marginalized. It also provides valuable insights on how such practices emerge and how the newcomer’s identity evolves within the class group.

This book shows that teachers at monolingual schools in Brussels approach their multilingual pupils in quite ambivalent ways (severely imposing the school language, but also recognizing pupils' multilingualism). Underlining this ambivalence is important because the scientific literature typically prefers a focus on teachers who either support or suppress their pupils' multilingualism. Much ordinary, inconsistent, teacher behavior thus falls off the radar, while those teachers who appear in the literature are either praised (as critical) or blamed (as ideologically deceived). This book thus explores uncharted territory, it explains teachers' inconsistency as a type of thinking, and it suggests that we can evaluate their behavior in more complex terms than simply good or bad.
