Factors Governing the Storage Life of Solid Propellant Rocket Motors
Author: R. Stenson
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category :
Languages : en
Pages : 23
Book Description
The behaviour of composite and double-base propellant rocket motors on storage is reviewed and the problems of safety and deterioration in performance are considered with emphasis on the basic chemical and physical changes involved. Storage at elevated temperatures is shown to be very important and accelerated testing is used to predict the effects of much longer cool storage. Tests necessary to avoid eventual spontaneous inflammation include compatibility of ingredients and materials, temperatures of ignition, estimation of the rate of stabiliser consumption and its relation to the safe chemical life, and measurement of heat evolution to permit calculation of cook-off limitations on charge dimensions for double-base or similar reactive propellants.

The Service Life of Rocket Motors Filled with Double Base Propellants
Author: G. H. S. Young
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category :
Languages : en
Pages : 10
Book Description
Double base propellants have been used in British Service for over 70 years; originally chemical stability was assured by the addition of mineral jelly but this was later replaced by the more effective ethyl centralite. Ordnance propellants were sentenced as life expired when half the stabilizer initially present had been consumed. Life assessment has become more complex for modern compositions, especially those containing additives such as lead compounds or ammonium perchlorate, although chemical stability remains of paramount importance. With the advent of larger charges, problems of self-heating and gas generation have resulted in the development of new methods for testing chemical stability. Ballistic and physical property changes which cannot always be predicted from accelerated storage tests have also become more important for rocket applications. The interactions between double base propellants and the inhibitors and adhesives used are also life limiting. (Author Modified Abstract).

Solid Rocket Propulsion Technology
Author: A. Davenas
Publisher: Newnes
ISBN: 0080984754
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 623
Book Description
This book, a translation of the French title Technologie des Propergols Solides, offers otherwise unavailable information on the subject of solid propellants and their use in rocket propulsion. The fundamentals of rocket propulsion are developed in chapter one and detailed descriptions of concepts are covered in the following chapters. Specific design methods and the theoretical physics underlying them are presented, and finally the industrial production of the propellant itself is explained. The material used in the book has been collected from different countries, as the development of this field has occurred separately due to the classified nature of the subject. Thus the reader not only has an overall picture of solid rocket propulsion technology but a comprehensive view of its different developmental permutations worldwide.

Handling and Operating Instructions for Rocket Motor X258
Author: P. Johnson
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category :
Languages : en
Pages : 62
Book Description
Rocket motor X258 is a case-bonded, compositemodified double-base solid propellant system which uses reinforced plastic and aluminum for all major inert components. The unit packages 506 pounds of propellant in 70 pounds of inert weight. Weight at burnout is approximately 63 pounds. The X258 delivers 143,200 lbs-sec of total impulse when operating in vacuum. Rocket Motor X258 was developed as the fourth stage power plant for the Scout launching vehicle. This manual gives a brief description of rocket motor X258 and the operating, handling, and storage instructions necessary for its proper use. (Author).
