Book Description
ENVIRONMENT Natural Resources and Aquatic Environment provides insight into existing knowledge of traditional knowledge and local wisdom with regard to natural resources and aquatic environment. This book presents the reader about the strong correlation between natural resources and science and its relationship with the local knowledge of local communities. Natural sources such as marine environment and its fauna are very important in human life. Therefore, people create various equipment and modern techniques to explore the marine resources for their survival. However, before the advent of modern equipments, the world community depends on local knowledge to survive. Various marine resources that are useful to human have been discussed in this book. The importance of science and technology in improving the functions of life are also discussed. Universiti Sains Malaysia, Penerbit Universiti Sains Malaysia

Elasmobranch Biodiversity, Conservation and Management
Author: Sarah L. Fowler
Publisher: IUCN
ISBN: 9782831706504
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 282
Book Description
The Darwin Elasmobranch Biodiversity Conservation and Management project in Sabah held a three-day international seminar that included a one-day workshop in order to highlight freshwater and coastal elasmobranch conservation issues in the region and worldwide, to disseminate the result of the project to other Malaysian states and countries, and to raise awareness of the importance of considering aspects of elasmobranch biodiversity in the context of nature conservation, commercial fisheries management, and for subsistence fishing communities. These proceedings contain numerous peer-reviewed papers originally presented at the seminar, which cover a wide range of topics, with particular reference to species from freshwater and estuarine habitats. The workshop served to develop recommendations concerning the future prospects of elasmobranch fisheries, biodiversity, conservation and management. This paper records those conclusions, which highlight the importance of elasmobranchs as top marine predators and keystone species, noting that permanent damage to shark and ray populations are likely to have serious and unexpected negative consequences for commercial and subsistence yields of other important fish stocks.

Ecology and Conservation of Southeast Asian Marine and Freshwater Environments including Wetlands
Author: A. Sasekumar
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 9401109583
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 321
Book Description
A major concern among ecologists in and outside the ASEAN region is the degradation of the environment, and the overexploitation of freshwater and marine resources. There is as yet no indication that freshwater and marine resources are being managed on a sustainable basis, and loss of wetlands, whether freshwater swamps or mangrove swamps, is a major problem in the ASEAN region. Reclamation of mangrove swamps for aquaculture and agriculture seems to be a continuous activity here and the status of marine parks should also be examined in the light of recent resort development acitivities on small islands. This volume contains numerous recommendations for the promotion of ecological studies and regional cooperation in marine, freshwater ecology and conservation, with special emphasis on the common water masses like the Strait of Malacca, Gulf of Thailand and the South China Sea.
