Book Description
The author challenges the breach between the secular and the religious, rendering that breach ambiguous. Such ambiguity, the author affirms, is relevant to a time when rigid and simplistic notions of religion and secularity are used to justify thoughtlessness and even violence. All too often the secular is thought of either as a triumph in "overcoming" the presumed irrationality and oppression of religion, or as lament in "losing" the meaning religion is thought once to have offered. Atchley suggests a view of the secular as an opportunity to experience an immanent value that is neither controlled by the human self nor conferred by a divine entity.

Book Description
Elements of Civilization delves beneath the surface of what we commonly accept as the pillars of society, challenging the notion that identity, religion, or abstract ideologies hold the real power. Instead, it focuses on the raw, embodied experience—the tangible, interactive systems that give form and function to our political and cultural realities. This book breaks down the intricate relationship between universal principles and the specific, everyday structures that keep a civilized order intact. Through a close examination of historical shifts—revolutions that falter, empires that crumble—*Elements of Civilization* invites readers to rethink the forces at play in the rise and fall of societies. It questions accepted truths and digs into the intellectual frameworks that underpin civilization, offering a bold, clear-eyed perspective on what truly holds it all together.

We are proud to present the Proceedings of the 2nd International Conference on Religion and Education 2020 (INCRE 2020). The Center for Research and Development of Ministry of Religious Affairs of Republic of Indonesia together together with other International organizations: International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM), Sultan Sharif Ali Islamic University (UNNISA) of Brunei, State Islamic University of Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta, and Asosasi Ma’had Ali Indonesia (AMALI) hosted and organized the second annual conference in the general field of education and religion. The conference provided a forum for education professionals engaged in research and development to share ideas, interact with others, present their latest works, and strengthen the collaboration among academics, researchers and professionals. It was a single-track, highly selective conference attended by leading experts from academia, industry, and government. Due to the Covid-19 Pandemic, we organized the conference virtually in 2 days event 11-12 November 2020 with 4 keynote speakers: Prof Prof Azyumardi Azra from State Islamic University of Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta, Prof Abdul Wahab Abdul Rahman from International Islamic University Malaysia, Prof. Achmad Gunaryo from Research and Development, Ministry of Religious Affair, Indonesia, and Dr. Syamsi Ali from Jamaica Muslim Center, New York USA. The proceeding consisted of 34 accepted papers from the total of 82 submission papers. The proceeding consisted of 10 main areas of education and religion. They are: Modernizing madrasas in global contexts, Teacher and Education development, Student abilities in religion education, Education and Technology, World Class University in Indonesian religious university, Local wisdom and religion education, Citizenship in religion education, Religion and character education, Moderism in religion and education, and Islamic boarding school stretching. All papers have been scrutinized by a panel of reviewers who provide critical comments and corrections, and thereafter contributed to the improvement of the quality of the papers. We strongly believe that INCRE 2020 conference has become a good forum for all researcher, developers, practitioners, scholars, policy makers, especially post graduate students to discuss their understandings of current processes and findings, as well as to look at possibilities for setting-up new trends in Education and Religion. We also expect that the future INCRE conference will be as successful and stimulating, as indicated by the contributions presented in this volume.

Book Description
Most Americans can recite the names of famous generals and historic battles. Some can also name champions of nonviolence like Martin Luther King Jr., or recall the struggles for peace and justice that run like a thread through U.S. history. But little attention is paid to the intellectual tradition of nonviolence. Ira Chernus surveys the evolution of this powerful idea from the Colonial Era up to today, focusing on representative movements (Anabaptists, Quakers, Anarchists, Progressives) and key individuals (Thoreau, Reinhold Niebuhr, Dorothy Day, A.J. Muste, King, Barbara Deming), including non-Americans like Mohandas Gandhi and Thich Nhat Hanh, who have helped form the idea of nonviolence in the United States. American Nonviolence offers an essential guide for both students and activists. -- Provided by publisher

Book Description
I have been thinking about the philosophical issue of truth for more than two decades. It is one of several fascinating philosophical issues that motivated me to change my primary re ective interest to philosophy after receiving BS in mathem- ics in 1982. Some serious academic work in this connection started around the late eighties when I translated into Chinese a dozen of Donald Davidson’s representative essays on truth and meaning and when I assumed translator for Adam Morton who gave a series of lectures on the issue in Beijing (1988), which was co-sponsored by my then institution (Institute of Philosophy, Chinese Academy of Social Science). I have loved the issue both for its own sake (as one speci c major issue in the phil- ophy of language and metaphysics) and for the sake of its signi cant involvement in many philosophical issues in different subjects of philosophy. Having been attracted to the analytic approach, I was then interested in looking at the issue both from the points of view of classical Chinese philosophy and Marxist philosophy, two major styles or frameworks of doing philosophy during that time in China, and from the point of view of contemporary analytic philosophy, which was then less recognized in the Chinese philosophical circle.

Book Description
The passages in this Study Book have been taken directly from Krishnamurti's talks and books from 1933 through 1967. The compil- ers began by reading all the passages from this period which contained the word action—the theme of this book. This would not have been possible without the use of a full text computer database, produced by the Krishnamurti Foundation Trust of England. Over 750 passages were studied in all, and the aspects of "action" most frequently addressed by Krishnamurti were noted. These aspects then formed the outline for the contents of this book. The material selected has not been altered from the way it was originally printed except for limited correction of spelling, punctua- tion, and missing words. Words or phrases that appear in brackets are not Krishnamurti's, but have been added by the compilers for the sake of clarity. Ellipses introducing a passage, or ending it, indicate that the passage begins or ends in mid-sentence. Ellipses in the course of a passage indicate words or sentences omitted. A series of asterisks between paragraphs shows that there are paragraphs from that talk which have been omitted. Captions, set off from the body of the text, have been used with many passages. Most captions are statements taken directly from the text, with some being a combination of phrases from the passage. Krishnamurti spoke from such a large perspective that his entire vision was implied in any extended passage. If one wishes to see how a statement flows out of his whole discourse, one can find the full context from the references at the foot of each passage. These refer primarily to talks which have been published in The Collected Works of J. Krishnamurti. This seventeen-volume set covers the entire period from which this study book has been drawn. A complete bibliography is included at the end of this book. Students and scholars may also be interested in additional passages on action not used in the book, available for study upon written request, in the archives of the Krishna- murti Foundation of America. This Study Book aims to give the reader as comprehensive a view as possible, in 140 pages, of the question of action as explored by Krishnamurti during the period covered. Most of the material presented has not been previously published, except in the Verbatim Reports which were produced privately, in limited numbers, primarily for those who attended Krishnamurti's talks.
