Excerpt from Congregational History, 1567-1700: In Relation to Contemporaneous Events, and the Conflict of Freedom, Purity, and Independence This has been my main object throughout. Hence my desire neither to divert the attention of the reader by frivolous discussions, fanciful theories, or vain speculations. With the same motive, I have sought not to weary the attention by encumbering the story with matters either irrelevant or unattractive. Extract from old manuscripts or pamphlets are modernized in orthography; and, when not necessary to adduce them in proof of some historical statements, the liberty is taken to omit what is prolix, and to condense a long and wearisome passage into a few concise words, for the sake of clearness and force. This is now well understood to be the most judicious course. No historical writer is under any obligation to be dull, verbose, and unintelligible, in order to repeat verbatim the sayings of some monotonous writer of the sixteenth or seventeenth centuries - still less to reproduce the low and offensive Marprelate Tracts. Rubbish of this kind ought long ago to have been swept into oblivion - except, perhaps, a trifling specimen of it, to indicate the spirit of the time.
