Revisiting the Historical Context and Drivers of Farmer-Herder Conflict in Benue State, Nigeria

Book Description
Nigeria has been engulfed in various conflicts since the return to democratic rule in 1999. These range from religious conflicts to ethnic and resource-based conflicts. The conflict between farmers and herders is one of the most dreaded and has generated a lot of fears of an outright war between ethnic parties to the conflict. This article traced the historical origin of the farmer-herder conflict by examining Fulani migration into the Benue Valley, pre-violent inter-group relations, and the breaking point. The presence of Fulani herders in the Benue Valley can be traced to 100 years back, and their relationship with host communities was cordial up until the late 20th century when the human population increased astronomically leading to fierce competition over scarce land and water resources. The root causes of the conflict are but not limited to drought and desertification, loss of grazing lands, new livestock and farming practices, rural banditry and cattle rustling, escalating conflict across northern Nigeria, and collapse of traditional mechanisms for conflict resolution. It is pertinent therefore for stakeholders to understand the historical context of the conflict as well as its root causes in order to proffer lasting solutions to this menace. Ranching and afforestation in Northern Nigeria are some of the solutions. The paper employed the ex-post factor research design and used primary and secondary data. Data were historically analyzed in order to understand the relationship between past events and contemporary issues in the farmer-herder conflict.

Women's Peacebuilding Initiatives in the Benue Valley, Nigeria
Author: John Tavershima Agberagba
Publisher: LAP Lambert Academic Publishing
ISBN: 9783659616150

Languages : en
Pages : 488
Book Description
The difficulty in implementing UNSCR 1325 and the refusal of men in the Benue Valley, Nigeria (BVN) to discuss peace in the formal space with women motivated this book. It examines the systematic way women use their socialised skills to perform important peacebuilding initiatives and it offers analysis of the systematic and structural problems of post-colonial patrarichal gender order which makes it socially acceptable to exclude women's initiatives in formal spaces and by extension from formal conflict resolution processes in the BVN. The book uses the human needs and some gender socialisation theories to conceptualise women's work in the BVN. Topics: Conflict analysis, the root causes of protracted social conflict; sources of women's skills in conflict resolution; women's vision in relation to the satisfaction of human needs; women's initiatives in conflict resolution; and pre-colonial, colonial and post-colonial gender order in the BVN. This book is intended for scholars and students, as well as practitioners, of conflict resolution and gender studies; it may prove methodologically useful to Master's students wishing to go on to do a PhD.
