Book Description
Dense living conditions in Hong Kong do not provide much privacy for lesbians and other sexual minorities living with their families. As a result, lesbians often locate alternative spaces to develop support networks with other women. Others reject the notion of lesbian spaces and instead assert their visibility in different aspects of everyday life. Based on life history interviews with several dozen lesbians living in Hong Kong, this book maps the complex relations between personal subjectivities and spatialities as they emerge and interact with various social justice movements and alternative communities. Denise Tse-shang Tangis an assistant professor of sociology at the University of Hong Kong.

Book Description
This book is the first book-length ethnographic study on Hong Kong women with same-sex desires and transgender lesbians in relation to urban spaces. This book aims to discuss how multi-faceted experiences of living in density shape one's life and determine lesbian and transgender sexualities within and beyond the city of Hong Kong.

Book Description
Conditional constructions have long fascinated linguists, grammarians and philosophers. In this pioneering new study, Barbara Dancygier and Eve Sweetser offer a new descriptive framework for the study of conditionality, broadening the range of richly described conditional constructions. They explore theoretical issues such as the mental-space-building processes underlying conditional thinking and the form-meaning relationship involved in expressing conditionality. Using a broad range of attested English conditional constructions, the book examines inter-constructional relationships. Within the framework of Mental Spaces Theory, shared parameters of meaning are shown to be relevant to conditional constructions generally, as well as related temporal and causal constructions. This significant contribution to the field will be welcomed by a wide range of researchers in theoretical and cognitive linguistics.

Book Description
Series of scalars, vectors, or functions are among the fundamental objects of mathematical analysis. When the arrangement of the terms is fixed, investigating a series amounts to investigating the sequence of its partial sums. In this case the theory of series is a part of the theory of sequences, which deals with their convergence, asymptotic behavior, etc. The specific character of the theory of series manifests itself when one considers rearrangements (permutations) of the terms of a series, which brings combinatorial considerations into the problems studied. The phenomenon that a numerical series can change its sum when the order of its terms is changed is one of the most impressive facts encountered in a university analysis course. The present book is devoted precisely to this aspect of the theory of series whose terms are elements of Banach (as well as other topological linear) spaces. The exposition focuses on two complementary problems. The first is to char acterize those series in a given space that remain convergent (and have the same sum) for any rearrangement of their terms; such series are usually called uncon ditionally convergent. The second problem is, when a series converges only for certain rearrangements of its terms (in other words, converges conditionally), to describe its sum range, i.e., the set of sums of all its convergent rearrangements.

Book Description
This book consists of contributions by the participants of the Fifth Conference on Function Spaces, held at Southern Illinois University in May of 2006. The papers cover a broad range of topics, including spaces and algebras of analytic functions of one and of many variables (and operators on such spaces), $L{p $-spaces, spaces of Banach-valued functions, isometries of function spaces, geometry of Banach spaces, and other related subjects. The goal of the conference was to bring together mathematicians interested in various problems related to function spaces and to facilitate the exchange of ideas between people working on similar problems. Hence, the majority of papers in this book are accessible to non-experts. Some articles contain expositions of known results and discuss open problems, others contain new results.

Book Description
In inverse problems one wants to find some parameter of interest which is not directly observable by indirect measurement. These measurements are usually noisy while the mapping of measurement to parameter is typically illposed (that is unstable). Therefore one applies regularization techniques that balance these two factors to find a stable approximation of the sought for parameter. However, in order to bound the reconstruction error, one needs additional information on the true parameter, which is nowadays typically formulated in terms of variational source conditions. In this thesis, we develop a general strategy to verify these conditions based on smoothness of the true parameter and the illposedness of the problem; the latter will be characterized by exploiting structural similarities to stability estimates. Following this, we apply our strategy to verify variational source conditions for parameter identification problems, inverse scattering and electrical impedance tomography.

Book Description
This book examines an abstract mathematical theory, placing special emphasis on results applicable to formal logic. If a theory is especially abstract, it may find a natural home within several of the more familiar branches of mathematics. This is the case with the theory of closure spaces. It might be considered part of topology, lattice theory, universal algebra or, no doubt, one of several other branches of mathematics as well. In our development we have treated it, conceptually and methodologically, as part of topology, partly because we first thought ofthe basic structure involved (closure space), as a generalization of Frechet's concept V-space. V-spaces have been used in some developments of general topology as a generalization of topological space. Indeed, when in the early '50s, one of us started thinking about closure spaces, we thought ofit as the generalization of Frechet V space which comes from not requiring the null set to be CLOSURE SPACES ANDLOGIC XlI closed(as it is in V-spaces). This generalization has an extreme advantage in connection with application to logic, since the most important closure notion in logic, deductive closure, in most cases does not generate a V-space, since the closure of the null set typically consists of the "logical truths" of the logic being examined.

Book Description
Most classes of operators that are not isomorphic embeddings are characterized by some kind of a “smallness” condition. Narrow operators are those operators defined on function spaces that are “small” at {-1,0,1}-valued functions, e.g. compact operators are narrow. The original motivation to consider such operators came from theory of embeddings of Banach spaces, but since then they were also applied to the study of the Daugavet property and to other geometrical problems of functional analysis. The question of when a sum of two narrow operators is narrow, has led to deep developments of the theory of narrow operators, including an extension of the notion to vector lattices and investigations of connections to regular operators. Narrow operators were a subject of numerous investigations during the last 30 years. This monograph provides a comprehensive presentation putting them in context of modern theory. It gives an in depth systematic exposition of concepts related to and influenced by narrow operators, starting from basic results and building up to most recent developments. The authors include a complete bibliography and many attractive open problems.
