Book Description
36th Tutzing Symposion Computer Application in Process and Plant Engineering The volume represents the revised papers of the 36th Tutzing Symposion held at the Evangelische Akademie Scholss Tutzing. Germany, on March 9 – 12, 1998. Computers and application software constitute a major driving force for progress in chemical engineering. Major impacts have been initiated by new computer based calculation methods and the inclusion of heuristics for synthesis, simulation and optimization of individual processes as well as plant wide operation. CAD-software provides the capacity to extract technical information represented in a drawing and to integrate it with alpha-numeric data. Global networks have initiated a further revolution in information technology as it is applied to the field of chemical engineering. It has been ten years since the last Tutzing Symposion on ???Modern computer technologies and their effects on chemical technology" took place. This long time span provided ample reason to review and to discuss the impact of modern computer technologies in progress engineering. Representatives of software companies, academic researchers as well as industrial development managers and users of practical applications were invited to discuss recent computer applications as well as their own vision of future challenges. The topics covered by the 24 papers include system integration, process development, process design, process control and plant design.

Book Description
An Applied Guide to Process and Plant Design, 2nd edition, is a guide to process plant design for both students and professional engineers. The book covers plant layout and the use of spreadsheet programs and key drawings produced by professional engineers as aids to design; subjects that are usually learned on the job rather than in education. You will learn how to produce smarter plant design through the use of computer tools, including Excel and AutoCAD, "What If Analysis, statistical tools, and Visual Basic for more complex problems. The book also includes a wealth of selection tables, covering the key aspects of professional plant design which engineering students and early-career engineers tend to find most challenging. Professor Moran draws on over 20 years' experience in process design to create an essential foundational book ideal for those who are new to process design, compliant with both professional practice and the IChemE degree accreditation guidelines. - Includes new and expanded content, including illustrative case studies and practical examples - Explains how to deliver a process design that meets both business and safety criteria - Covers plant layout and the use of spreadsheet programs and key drawings as aids to design - Includes a comprehensive set of selection tables, covering aspects of professional plant design which early-career designers find most challenging

Book Description
Computer aided process engineering (CAPE) tools have been very successfully used in process design and product engineering for a long time. In particular, simulation and modelling tools have enabled engineers to analyse and understand the behaviour of selected processes prior to building actual plants. The aim of design or retrofit of chemical processes is to produce profitably products that satisfy the societal needs, ensuring safe and reliable operation of each process, as well as minimising any effects on the environment. This involves the conceptual design or retrofit of plants and processes, novel manufacturing approaches, process/control system design interactions and operability, manufacturability, environmental and safety issues. Backed by current studies, this 2-volume set gives a comprehensive survey of the various approaches and latest developments on the use of CAPE in the process industry. An invaluable reference to the scientific and industrial community in the field of computer aided process and product engineering.

Book Description
Digital Computer Applications to Process Control presents the developments in the application of digital computers to the control of technical processes. This book discusses the control principles and includes as well direct feedback and feed forward control as monitoring and optimization of technical processes. Organized into five parts encompassing 77 chapters, this book begins with an overview of the two categories of microprocessor systems. This text then discusses the concept of a sensor controlled robot that adapts to any task, assures product quality, and eliminates machine tending labor. Other chapters consider the ergonomic adaptation of the human operator's working conditions to his abilities. This book discusses as well the self-tuning regulator for liquid level in the acetic acid evaporator and its actual performance in production. The final chapter deals with algebraic method for deadbeat control of multivariable linear time-invariant continuous systems. This book is a valuable resource for electrical and control engineers.

Book Description
In the latter half of the 20th century, forces have conspired to make the human community, at last, global. The easing of tensions between major nations, the expansion of trade to worldwide markets, widespread travel and cultural exchange, pervasive high-speed communications and automation, the explosion of knowledge, the streamlining of business, and the adoption of flexible methods have changed the face of manufacturing itself, and of research and education in manufacturing. The acceptance of the continuous improvement process as a means for organizations to respond quickly and effectively to swings in the global market has led to the demand for individuals educated in a broad range of cultural, organizational, and technical fields and capable of absorbing and adapting required knowledge and training throughout their careers. No longer will manufacturing research and education focus on an industrial sector or follow a national trend, but rather will aim at enabling international teams of companies to cooperate in rapidly designing, prototyping, and manufacturing products. The successful enterprise of the 21st century will be characterized by an organizational structure that efficiently responds to customer demands and changing global circumstances, a corporate culture that empowers employees at all levels and encourages constant communication among related groups, and a technological infrastructure that fully supports process improvement and integration. In changing itself to keep abreast of the broader transformation in manufacturing, the enterprise must look first at its organization and culture, and thereafter at supporting technologies.

Book Description
Techniques such as dead time compensation, adaptive control and Kalman filtering have been around for some time, but as yet find little application in industry. This is due to several reasons, including: Articles in the literature usually assume that the reader is familiar with a specific topic and are therefore often difficult for the practicing control engineer to comprehend. Many practicing control engineers in the process industry have a chemical engineering background and did not receive a control engineering education. There is a wide gap between theory and practical implementation, since implementation is primarily concerned with robustness, and theory is not. The user therefore has to build an "expert shell" in order to achieve the desired robustness. Little is published on this issue, however. This book tries to promote the use of advanced control techniques by taking the reader from basic theory to practical implementation. It is therefore of interest to practicing control engineers in various types of industries, especially the process industry. Graduate and undergraduate students in control engineering will also find the book extremely useful since many practical details are given which are usually omitted in books on control engineering. Of special interest are the simulation examples, illustrating the application of various control techniques. The examples are available on a 5-1/4" floppy disk and can be used by anyone who has access to LOTUS 1-2-3. Chapter 1 is the introduction; Chapters 2 through 6 deal with distributed control system networks, computer system software, computer system selection, reliability and security, and batch and continuous control. Chapter 7 gives and introduction to advanced control. Chapters 8 through 11 deal with dead time compensation techniques and model identification. Chapters 12 through 14 discuss constraint control and design, and the adjustment and application of simple process models and optimization. Chapter 15 gives a thorough introduction to adaptive control, and the last two chapters deal with state and parameter estimation. This book is a valuable tool for everyone who realizes the importance of advanced control in achieving improved plant performance. It will take the reader from theory to practical implementation.
