Book Description
Excerpt from Computations for Marine Engines This book presents one phase of the instruction in marine engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and is Offered now in hopes that it may be useful to students of marine engine design and to young engineers beginning the practice Of their profession. It gives methods of computing the proper size and strength of the parts Of a marine engine, similar to those in good practice, with special attention to instruction, and perhaps carried to a somewhat greater degree Of refinement. Book Description
Excerpt from The Design of Marine Engines and Auxiliaries In the section on Engine Balancing, although no portion of the material is original, much time and effort has been expended in correlating the work of various investigators. The question of pressures upon main bearings will be found more extensively treated in a paper by the author in Vol. 18, Part I, of The Journal of the American Society of Naval Engineers. The author wishes to acknowledge the kindness of the Newport News Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Company in permitting him to use certain drawings for Plates 1, 2, and 3. Book Description
Excerpt from Marine Engineering, Vol. 1: April 1897 With this steady rise of steam-pressures has been observed as constant increase in the value of the ratio of expansion ado ted in the most suc cessinl practice. One of t e most interesting, instructive, and remarkable facts in the history of the marine engine, as of other types, is the singular moderation of builders in following the principle enunciated by Watt in his patent of 1782, that of economical expansion of steam. Purely thermodynamic and purely mechanical theory dictated a ratio nearly equal to the quo tient of back-pressure divided by initial pressure; but, even after the introduction of the multiple cylinder engine, doing away, largely, with the difficulties arising from irregular impulse and consequent variable motion of the crank, all dc signers and builders recognized the existence of a limit far inside this of the ideal case. But it was only after the nature, extent, and effects of the internal wastes by cylinder condensation had been clearly shown, by Clark, Him, and Isherwood and their successors, that the real meaning of the known ineffectiveness of expan sion beyond a very restricted limit became famil iar to the profession of engineering. Book Description
Excerpt from Marine Engine Indicating: A Complete Treatise on the Indicator and Indicator Diagrams as Applied to Marine Engines It has been the writer's observation - and doubtless the reader's as well - that text books written on the subject of indicators are invariably based on experiences with stationary engines. That a thorough treatise on this all-important device, with special reference to its application to marine engines is greatly needed, is obvious to every marine engineer, and this work is undertaken expressly to meet that need, particular care being exercised, especially in all the analyses of diagrams, to be lucid and concise, rather than elaborately technical. The history of the indicator has been purposely avoided, as being superfluous, the writer deeming it of far greater importance to confine himself especially to a complete description of the most accurate of the modern type. In the analysis of diagrams it is important, when adjustment of valves must be made, to be able to construct and discuss the valve diagrams, and the object here has been to explain the methods in a clear manner, eliminating all geometrical proof. All diagrams shown were taken, in actual practice, from modern marine engines. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from A Manual of Marine Engineering: Comprising the Design, Construction, and Working of Marine Machinery In 1880, the triple compound engine was little more than a dream; in fact, there were then many people who believed in, and continued to use, the ordinary expansive engine. The highest boiler pressure used by advanced and enterprising engineers was 100 lbs. Per square inch, and few of them had ventured even so far as that. Steel crank-shafts, and other heavy forgings made of steel, were looked upon as luxuries to be indulged in only by the British and Foreign Governments, and wealthy corpora tions. At the present time ingot steel forgings are common enough, and not very much dearer than iron ones. Engines with three cranks were few and far between, and generally limited to very large compound engines, in which a single low-pressure cylinder would have been abnormally large. Today, most of the ships recently built have engines with three cranks, and even tug boats and other small steamers are generally fitted with three crank triple engines, While larger vessels not infrequently have four-crank triple and quadruple engines.
