Book Description
The book at hand presents a careful selection of relevant applications of CI methods for transport, logistics, and supply chain management problems. The chapters illustrate the current state-of-the-art in the application of CI methods in these fields and should help and inspire researchers and practitioners to apply and develop efficient methods. A few contributions in this book are extended versions of papers presented at EvoTransLog2007: The First European Workshop on Evolutionary Computation in Transportation and Logistics which was held in Valencia, Spain, in 2007. The majority of contributions are from additional, specially selected researchers, who have done relevant work in different areas of transport, logistics, and supply chain management. The goal is to broadly cover representative applications in these fields as well as different types of solution approaches. On the application side, the contributions focus on design of traffic and transportation networks, vehicle routing, and other important aspects of supply chain management such as inventory management, lot sizing, and lot scheduling. On the method side, the contributions deal with evolutionary algorithms, local search approaches, and scatter search combined with other CI techniques such as neural networks or fuzzy approaches. The book is structured according to the application domains. Thus, it has three parts dealing with traffic and transportation networks, vehicle routing, and supply chain management.

Book Description
Schedule planning is concerned with generating a schedule (a feasible plan of what cities to fly to and at what times) that has the most revenue potential, and resolving a host of related issues involving aircraft assignments and crew scheduling. Current practice in the airline industry is to divide the overall problem into a set of smaller subproblems and then to solve these subproblems sequentially. We develop an approximate integrated model and a new solution approach to measure the potential benefits that may be accrued by solving the entire schedule planning problem simultaneously. We show that solutions generated by current approached can be far from optimal, resulting in significant monetary losses to the airline industry.

Book Description
Most of the research efforts dealing with airline scheduling have been done on off-line plan optimization. However, nowadays, with the increasingly complex and huge traffic at airports, the real challenge is how to react to unexpected events that may cause plan-disruptions, leading to flight delays. Moreover these disruptive events usually affect at least three different dimensions of the situation: the aircraft assigned to the flight, the crew assignment and often forgotten, the passengers’ journey and satisfaction. This book includes answers to this challenge and proposes the use of the Multi-agent System paradigm to rapidly compose a multi-faceted solution to the disruptive event taking into consideration possible preferences of those three key aspects of the problem. Negotiation protocols taking place between agents that are experts in solving the different problem dimensions, combination of different utility functions and not less important, the inclusion of the human in the automatic decision-making loop make MASDIMA, the system described in this book, well suited for real-life plan-disruption management applications.

Book Description
Big data has become an important success driver in airline network planning. Maximilian Schosser explores the status quo of network planning across a case study group consisting of nine airlines representing different business models. The author describes 23 big data opportunities for airline network planning and evaluates them based on their specific value contribution for airline network planning. Subsequently, he develops a financial evaluation methodology for big data opportunities based on key performance indicators for airline network planning departments.

Book Description
The terms travel and tourism are often used interchangeably in tourism literature. This comprehensive textbook provides students with essential knowledge of the intricate relationship existing between travel, transport and tourism. The book analyses the structure, functions, activities, strategies and practices of each of the sectors in the travel industry, such as airlines, airports, tour operators, travel agencies and cruises. It is structured into six parts, covering all modes of transport (air, land and water), travel intermediation, the tour operation business and impacts and prospects for the future. International case studies are integrated throughout to showcase practical realities and challenges in the travel industry and to aid students’ learning and understanding. Written in an accessible and engaging style, this is an invaluable resource for students of tourism, hospitality, transport and travel management courses.
