Cette thèse porte sur la compréhension et la caractérisation de l'interface fibre-matrice au sein d'un composite auto-renforcé à matrice et fibre polypropylène. Ce travail a été réalisé dans le cadre du projet FUI « Composite2020 » qui vise à développer des composites par imprégnation en voie sèche et mise en forme par thermoformage. Dans un premier temps, l'étude a porté sur les phénomènes mis en jeu dans la création de l'interface/interphase : i) la mouillabilité de la fibre par la matrice, ii) la mobilité des chaînes macromoléculaires et iii) l'aptitude des chaînes à la cristallisation. Un bon mouillage entraînant un contact intime entre fibre et matrice, la mesure de l'énergie de surface permet d'évaluer les interactions mises en jeu et de déterminer le travail d'adhésion thermodynamique de l'interface résultante. La mobilité des chaînes macromoléculaires présentes à l'interface entre la surface de la matrice et celle des renforts, dépendante de la température et du temps appliqués, induit une interdiffusion des chaînes dont les enchevêtrements vont générer l'interphase et assurer l'autoadhésion du composite. Enfin, la capacité de cristalliser de la matrice au contact des fibres peut créer une morphologie cristalline locale à l'interface différente de celle au coeur de la matrice. Dans un second temps, l'interface est caractérisée mécaniquement aux échelles microscopique et macroscopique, au moyen des essais de pull-out et de traction hors-axes respectivement. Les phénomènes mis en jeu dans la création de l'interface/interphase dépendant des conditions (temps- températures) appliqués lors de l'élaboration des échantillons, permettent l'obtention d'interfaces aux propriétés différentes. Dans un dernier temps, la recyclabilité du composite auto-renforcé est étudiée : la miscibilité des phases en présence est analysée, et les propriétés mécaniques des pièces recyclées (non renforcées) sont testées en comparaison avec celles de la matrice initiale vierge, afin d'attester de la capacité de ce composite à une seconde vie.
