Mass flow formulae for incompressible and 'modified-incompressible' flow are compared with the isothermal comprssible flow relation under the following conditions:The gas flow is steady, isothermal, and fullydeveloped in a horizontal pipe of constant cross section with a prescribed static pressure drop (P1-P2).The comparative data are limited to static pressure ratios (P2/P1) > 1/2, and subsonic isothermal flow.Laminar and turbulent flows are treated.Under the limitations of the comparison, modified-incompressible flow and isothermal gas flow relations are identical when fL/2D is much greater than ln(P1/P2).Graphical plots indicate the degree of approximation or error involved in using incompressible relations to solve compressible flow problems.Pressure losses due to end effects are briefly discussed.(Author).

Summary: Elementary basic solutions of the equations of motion of a compressible fluid in the hodograph variables are developed and used to provide a basis for comparison, in the form of velocity correction formulas, of corresponding compressible and incompressible flows. The known approximate results of Chaplygin, von Kármán and Tsien, Temple and Yarwood, and Prandtl and Glauert are unified by means of the analysis of the present paper. Two new types of approximations, obtained from basic solutions, are introduced; they possess certain desirable features of the other approximations and appear preferable as a basis for extrapolation into the range of high stream Mach numbers and large disturbances to the main stream. Tables and figures giving velocity and pressure-coefficient correction factors are included in order to facilitate the practical application of the results.

This monograph considers the classical compressible Euler Equations in three space dimensions with an arbitrary equation of state, and whose initial data corresponds to a constant state outside a sphere. Under suitable restriction on the size of the initial departure from the constant state, the authors establish theorems which give a complete description of the maximal development. In particular, the boundary of the domain of the maximal solution contains a singular part where the density of the wave fronts blows up and shocks form. The authors obtain a detailed description of the geometry of this singular boundary, and a detailed analysis of the behavior of the solution there. The approach is geometric, the central concept being that of the acoustical spacetime manifold. Compared to a previous monograph treating the relativistic fluids by the first author, the present monograph not only gives simpler and self-contained proofs but also sharpens some of the results. In addition, it explains in depth the ideas on which the approach is based. Moreover, certain geometric aspects which pertain only to the non-relativistic theory are discussed.
