Author: William Popendorf
Publisher: CRC Press
ISBN: 9780849395284
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 736
Book Description
Do you need guidelines for choosing a substitute organic solvent that is safer to use? Do you need an effective, cheap but perhaps temporary way to reduce exposures before you can convince your employer to spend money on a long-term or more reliable solution? Do you need information about local exhaust ventilation or personal protective equipment like respirators and gloves? Industrial Hygiene Control of Airborne Chemical Hazards provides the answers to these questions and more. Science-based and quantitative, the book introduces methods for controlling exposures in diverse settings, focusing squarely on airborne chemical hazards. It bridges the gap between existing knowledge of physical principles and their modern application with a wealth of recommendations, techniques, and tools accumulated by generations of IH practitioners to control chemical hazards. Provides a unique, comprehensive tool for facing the challenges of controlling chemical hazards in the workplace. Although William Popendorf has written the book at a fundamental level, he assumes the reader has some experience in science and math, as well as in manufacturing or other work settings with chemical hazards, but is inexperienced in the selection, design, implementation, or management of chemical exposure control systems. Where the book is quantitative, of course there are lots of formulae, but in general the author avoids vague notation and long derivations.

Bayesian Decision Analysis
Author: Jim Q. Smith
Publisher: Cambridge University Press
ISBN: 1139491113
Category : Mathematics
Languages : en
Pages : 349
Book Description
Bayesian decision analysis supports principled decision making in complex domains. This textbook takes the reader from a formal analysis of simple decision problems to a careful analysis of the sometimes very complex and data rich structures confronted by practitioners. The book contains basic material on subjective probability theory and multi-attribute utility theory, event and decision trees, Bayesian networks, influence diagrams and causal Bayesian networks. The author demonstrates when and how the theory can be successfully applied to a given decision problem, how data can be sampled and expert judgements elicited to support this analysis, and when and how an effective Bayesian decision analysis can be implemented. Evolving from a third-year undergraduate course taught by the author over many years, all of the material in this book will be accessible to a student who has completed introductory courses in probability and mathematical statistics.

Performance Evaluation of a Real-time Aerosol Monitor
Author: Kenneth L. Williams
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Aerosols
Languages : en
Pages : 28
Book Description
The Bureau of Mines laboratory tested the response of a commercially available real-time aerosol monitor (GCA RAM-I) to various dusts. Monitor measurements were recorded, averaged, and compared with simultaneous gravimetric measurements of each test dust. Tests usually lasted several hours. The test dusts of various particle size distributions used included coal, limestone, and a commercially available test dust. For each particular dust, the monitor response was linear and correlated well with mass concentration over the range of about 0.5 to 10 mg/ma3 The monitor can estimate a 2.0-mg/m3 respirable coal dust concentration within as little as ± 6 pet with 95 pet confidence. The monitor must, however, be calibrated with the dust to be measured because the instrument response is affected by the type of dust particle. The average monitor response to a mass concentration of coal dust was approximately twice the average monitor response to the same mass concentration of limestone dust.
