Book Description
"Violent extremism often spreads through localized conflict, with extremist groups manipulating local grievances to gain position and traction. Both the international community and national governments have difficulty working in such small-scale and diverse conflict contexts. Understanding how communities undermine and regulate violent extremist groups helps assess local risk and vulnerability for improved, targeted support. This experimental, mixed-method study identifies key community resilience factors to violent extremism in urban neighborhoods in Kenya, including high levels of Christian-Muslim association and high-functioning community-led and -focused security initiatives. These community resilience factors could become part of an evidence-based foundation for successful prevention programming in and beyond Kenya"--Publisher description.

Book Description
Before the rise of the Al-Shabaab, Eastern Africa was home to different organizational nodes of the Al-Qaeda network. Al-Qaeda was responsible for many threats, of which include the August 7, 1998, bombings in Kenya and Tanzania. As terrorism threats have evolved over the years, countermeasures have continued to do the same. Countering Violent Extremism in Kenya: Community, State, and Security Perspectives by John Mwangi Githigaro explores Kenya’s historical experiences with terrorism in the pre- and post 9/11 periods as a lens to situate how different stakeholders present the threats of extremism and the associated countermeasures they consider as valuable. The stakeholders presented throughout this book include: security actors, society organizations, academics, and community members. Through extended ethnographic research and fieldwork collected from focus groups within Nairobi and Mombasa between 2016 and 2022, Githigaro offers an opportunity to observe the evolution of counterterrorism interventions in Kenya and the dilemmas this has created around primarily state-society relations, an exploration of how different stakeholders perceive the efficacy of counterterrorism measures, and the appraisal of counterterrorism initiative (CT) interventions that render ongoing CVE interventions less effective.

Book Description
Kenya continues to suffer multiple threats from violent extremism. While communities across Kenya are faced with challenges that can be considered risk factors for radicalisation and violent extremism, they also demonstrate strengths that can be developed into building resilience against such violent extremism. This study sought to understand how affected communities in Kenya demonstrate resilience to violent extremism, as well as what conditions encourage dialogue between various groups to address and resolve problems that might otherwise result in radicalisation and violent extremism.

Book Description
Kenya is one of the most politically dynamic and influential countries in sub-Saharan Africa. Today, it is known in equal measure as a country that has experienced great highs and tragic lows. In the 1960s and 1970s, Kenya was seen as a ''success story" of development in the periphery, and also led the way in terms of democratic breakthroughs in 2010 when a new constitution devolved power and placed new constraints on the president. However, the country has also made international headlines for the kind of political instability that occurs when electoral violence is expressed along ethnic lines, such as during the "Kenya crisis" of 2007/08 when over 1,000 people lost their lives and almost 700,000 were displaced. The Oxford Handbook of Kenyan Politics explains these developments and many more, drawing together 50 specially commissioned chapters by leading researchers. The chapters they have contributed address a range of essential topics including the legacy of colonial rule, ethnicity, land politics, devolution, the constitution, elections, democracy, foreign aid, the informal economy, civil society, human rights, the International Criminal Court, the growing influence of China, economic policy, electoral violence, and the impact of mobile phone technology. In addition to covering some of the most important debates about Kenyan politics, the volume provides an insightful overview of Kenyan history from 1930 to the present day and features a set of chapters that review the impact of devolution on regional politics in every part of the country.
