Book Description
Excerpt from Commercial Correspondence for Dictation to Shorthand Students Letter writing from dictation is' the natural progression of those students who have mastered the principles of sound-writing. To supply the first needs of those who have acquired the theory of phonography, the compiler has prepared this book, grading the letters according to the technical difficulties of the shorthand outlines involved. The material has been collected from the letter books and files of the numerous contributors, and has been carefully edited so that the best grammatical construction is presented, while the phraseology peculiar to the varied lines of business remains undisturbed. The collection comprises examples of the correspondence employed in general office work; stocks and bonds; law; architecture; railroad freights; coal and ore mining and ship ping; iron and steel lumber; grocers' supplies type, stationery, and publishing interests; mechanical apparatus; electricity; etc. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from Dictation Studies: A Manual of Business Correspondence Designed Especially as a Text-Book for Advanced Work in Shorthand Departments of Schools and Colleges How and what to phrase while writing shorthand is a question of great importance, and one that should have special attention at the outset before the student starts on a course of dictation cover ing several hundreds of letters. To meet these requirements, the writer has prepared the lists shown on the first pages of this man ual. There are many expressions, the individual words of which are never written separately, and again, it is very easy for the student of limited experience to join words (very often large words) that should not be joined, and which no practical stenographer would join. Therefore, it will be necessary for him to carefully study the phrases suggested, and to be guided by them in carrying the principle into general use. The small list of special phrases will be found very useful, and should be carefully practiced, so as to be instantly written when ever heard. The writer believes that all familiar proper names should be written in shorthand; that the student should be trained to write these outlines in shorthand when they occur in the dictation, just as easily as any other word. By careful and accurate vocalizing, a large per cent of all proper names may be written in shorthand. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from Munson's Phonographic Dictation Book Business Correspondence Longhand Key to Munson's First Phonographic Reader The letters contained in this book are copies of real business letters received from shorthand writers engaged in doing amanuensis work in business offices in various parts of the United States and Canada, and are given just as they were originally typewritten, even to including the usual characters and abbreviations employed by business men in their correspondence, such as B/L for bill of lading, # for number, % for per cent., " for inch, etc. Words that are connected by hyphens are intended to be joined in phrases in writing. When to is indicated by placing the next word in the Fourth Position, the two words are treated as a phrase and a hyphen is placed between them; thus, to-be (B). At the end of each letter the number of words in the letter is denoted in figures. In counting words the rule prescribed by law in determining the number of words in a folio (100 words) has been followed, every figure, character, and abbreviation being considered as a word About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from The Universal Dictation Course of Dement's Testimony Shorthand: Made Up of Business Letters From Twenty-Six Different Businesses, Together With Legal Papers, Depositions, and Testimony From Civil and Criminal Cases The text-book of this system is a complete instructor as far as the principles of the system are concerned. It is not intended that this book shall take the place of the text-book, but that it shall be used as an auxiliary to the text-book. It is designed to follow the text-book, as a graded, classified, Dictation Course, for which there has always been a demand. Throughout the Dictation Course the student is recommended to make free 13 use of the text-book, by frequent reference to it, in all cases in which an outline is not understood, or a principle is forgotten. It is intended for all grades of writers, but especially, to take the student at the very beginning of dictation and lead him, in a most systematic manner, through a carefully graded course, from the easiest, ordinary business letters, to the most difficult matter. The course should be practised and written through repeatedly, occasionally reviewing work passed over, and speed and accuracy will result. It will be of great advantage to the instructors, students and writers of the 3 system, for systematic study and practise, in systematically planning the work in the schoolroom and classifying the school, for special preparation in any particular$ line of business, for gaining speed and at the same time keeping the notes in good form, and as a book of reference.
