Book Description
Excerpt from A Brief History of Printing in England: A Short History of Printing, in England From Caxton, to the Present Time HE treatment of the material used in this volume will be found somewhat different from that adopted in the two preceding. The narrower field of inquiry makes possible a closer following of the ordinary chronological method fof arrangement rather than the topical method of the other volumes. An attempt is made to trace the history of printing in Eng land through the centuries from Caxton to Morris and to include some insight into legal regulations, trade conditions, and industrial development generally. As before, it is to be remembered that this is a primer, a book of introductions. No attempt, therefore, is made to go far into details or to discuss disputed points or to include any considerable amount of technical detail. It is hoped that the reader will get a comprehensive view of the subject, will feel its human interest, and will catch some glimpse of its larger relation to the general history of the time. The writer has consulted a considerable range of authorities, a few of the more accessible of which are cited in the short list of books for supplementary read ing. Mention should be made of the very excellent study of John Baskerville, privately printed by C01. Josiah H. Benton, of Boston. This book may perhaps be found in the larger public libraries. Here, as always, it is to be regretted that although much has been writ ten on the subject of printing and of the history of printing a good general history of the subject is still greatly to be desired. Book Description
Excerpt from A Short History of the Art of Printing in England The object of this little treatise is to present a brief but fairly complete sketch of the history of Printing in this country. By the Art of Printing is generally understood the art of printing from moveable types. It is on this basis that I have dealt with the subject, no reference being made to Lithography, Copperplate printing, or the other processes by which impressions are obtained. As my readers will be found chiefly among the printers themselves, I have not thought it necessary to describe operations with which they are familiar. At the same time it is hoped that sufficient explanation is given to render the work intelligible to those who are unacquainted with the practice of the art. Being limited as to space, it has been my endeavour, after the introductory chapter, to confine myself strictly to the development of the Art in England, and to state all facts as tersely as possible. As, however, the work is published in commemoration of our first English Printer, I have written his biography at greater length than I should otherwise have done. Wherever practicable, I have sought the original sources of information, but want of time has prevented me from proving some dates and statements as thoroughly as I could wish. My thanks are due to Mr. William Blades, for supplying me with the means of obtaining photographic blocks of several old engravings; to Mr. Elliot Stock, for affording the opportunity of producing a facsimile of a page of the first book printed in England; to Mr. John Southward, for many valuable suggestions: and to Messrs. Koenig & Bauer, Messrs. Miller & Richard, Mr. Talbot Reed, Mr. Wm. Conisbee, Mr. W. Dawson, Mr. Samuel Bremner, Mr. J. M. Napier, and other gentlemen, for information they have given me. Book Description
Excerpt from A Guide to the Historical Collection of Prints Exhibited in the Second Northern Gallery In wood-engraving the design to be reproduced is first carefully drawn on the block (in the early days of the art most commonly of pear, apple, or beech-wood, later almost universally of box). All the surface of the block in the interstices of the drawing is then cut or scooped away. So that only those parts intended to print black are left standing. The rougher part of the work is performed with the chisel and gouge; the finer chiefly with a triangular-pointed tool called the graver. Gravers are of various size and form, and in modern work another variety of cutting-tool, called the 'tint-tool, ' is largely used. When the work of engraving is completed, the block is inked, and impressions on paper are taken from it either by rubbing with the hand or by means of a printing-press. Book Description
Excerpt from Bygone Nottinghamshire In connection with the illustrations I have a pleasing task to perform, in thanking the gentle man to whom this work is dedicated for contributing the panoramic view of F arndon, Stoke, and Nottingham, from a drawing evidently contemporary with and relating to the Battle of Stoke-field, copied by him from the original in the British Museum and in thanking Mr. Robert White, of vvorksop, the northern light Of our local history, for contributing the engraving of the grand Old priory gatehouse Of his town. In performing this office I must not overlook my son, Mr. W. H. Stevenson, the editor of the Records of the Borough of Nottingham, the Calendar of Close Rolls. Ed. II., 1307-1313, etc., to whom I am indebted for the Forest-boundary map of AD 1227, and assistance in revising the proofs.
