William Coldstream (1908–1987) was a leading figure in British twentieth-century art, influential both as a member of the art establishment and as a figurative painter. This book is both an engrossing account of his life and analysis of his work. Coldstream used art to portray real life, rendering his subjects—whether an urban landscape, a portrait, or a nude—with objectivity. In 1937 he co-founded the Euston Road School, and in 1943 he was appointed an Official War Artist and sent to Egypt and Italy, where he painted the war-torn landscape. Following the war he taught at Camberwell School of Art before being appointed Slade Professor of Fine Art in 1949. Coldstream remained in that position for twenty-five years, raising the Slade to the height of its renown and inspiring generations of students. After his retirement in 1975, he produced some of his finest works.

The work of mid-twentieth century art theorist Anton Ehrenzweig is explored in this original and timely study. An analysis of the dynamic and invigorating intellectual influences, institutional framework and legacy of his work, Between Art Practice and Psychoanalysis reveals the context within which Ehrenzweig worked, how that influenced him and those artists with whom he worked closely. Beth Williamson looks to the writing of Melanie Klein, Marion Milner, Adrian Stokes and others to elaborate Ehrenzweig?s theory of art, a theory that extends beyond the visual arts to music. In this first full-length study on his work, including an inventory of his library, previously unexamined archival material and unseen artworks sit at the heart of a book that examines Ehrenzweig?s working relationships with important British artists such as Bridget Riley, Eduardo Paolozzi and other members of the Independent Group in London in the 1950s and 1960s. In Ehrenzweig?s second book The Hidden Order of Art (1967) his thinking on Jackson Pollock is important too. It was this book that inspired American artists Robert Smithson and Robert Morris when they deployed his concept of ?dedifferentiation?. These essays attempt to confront the effect of years of postmodernity and its promotion of individuality at the cost of solidarity and communal spirit. In the wake of this it suggests possible frameworks for an art study that restores a certain focus on communal spirit. It proposes, too, that art study’s fragile position in contemporary society is a consequence of over-commercialisation and its resultant surface values. Consumerist and corporate ideology encourage the consumer/individual’s self-realisation, seemingly divorced from communal interests. Within this isolation lies the potential breakdown of ethics. Therefore, I dream of a kinder society, i.e. one where we are engaged in realising the community, as its citizens. This is not blind obedience, but in a spirit of contributing to a whole (society). More specifically, it means allowing and, to a degree, maintaining art study, as a sphere of possibilities for budding citizen artists. It is envisaging art study as a discursive arena, and creating an academic space that allows for art’s main contribution - the dislodging of the so-called proper – i.e. entrenched doctrine. I believe that art study can contribute to the improving of society, in the main, because art enacts a different sharing of the sensible.
