Book Description
This book offers an impressive collection of contributions on the epistemology of international biolaw and its applications, both in the legal and ethical fields. Bringing together works by some of the world’s most prominent experts on biolaw and bioethics, it constitutes a paradigmatic text in its field. In addition to exploring various ideologies and philosophies, including European, American and Mediterranean biolaw traditions, it addresses controversial topics straight from today’s headlines, such as genetic editing, the dual-use dilemma, and neurocognitive enhancement. The book encourages readers to think objectively and impartially in order to resolve the ethical and juridical dilemmas that stem from biotechnological empowerment and biomedical techniques. Accordingly, it offers a valuable resource for courses on biolaw, law, bioethics, and biomedical research, as well as courses that discuss law and the biosciences at different professional levels, e.g. in the courts, biomedical industry, pharmacological companies and the public space in general.

Book Description
Criminal and Citizen in Modern Mexico explores elite notions of crime and criminality from the late eighteenth to the early twentieth century. In Mexico these notions represented contested areas of the social terrain, places where generalized ideas about criminality transcended the individual criminal act to intersect with larger issues of class, race, gender, and sexuality. It was at this intersection that modern Mexican society bared its soul. Attitudes toward race amalgamation and indios, lower-class lifestyles and läperos, women and sexual deviance, all influenced perceptions of criminality and ultimately determined the fundamental issue of citizenship: who belonged and who did not. The liberal discourse of toleration and human rights, the positivist discourse of order and progress, the revolutionary discourse of social justice and integration sought in turn to disguise the exclusions of modern Mexican society behind a veil of criminality?to proscribe as criminal those activities that criminologists, penologists, and anthropologists clearly linked to marginalized social groups. This book attempts to lift that veil and to gaze, like Josä Guadalupe Posada, at the grinning calavera that it shields.

Book Description
This reference guide to the laws and legal literature of Mexico has been designed carefully by a reference librarian for researchers who do not read or speak Spanish. This basic sourcebook provides answers to the questions that are asked most frequently: Which is the relevant code? Where can the text of the code be found? What secondary material is available? Which material is available in English? This up-to-date guide should be useful as a reference in college, university, law, government, and public libraries and in companies that do business with Mexico. It could also be used in courses dealing with Mexican law and business. An introduction briefly describes Mexico's legal system and provides some historical background. Then the bibliography points to primary and secondary material of importance and is annotated partially. Entries are organized under forty-one subject categories with subdivisions pointing to the laws, the sources for the text of the laws, secondary materials from periodicals, and books and monographs. All Spanish titles are given first in Spanish and then in English. An appendix gives a directory of publishers. Author and subject indexes are included.
