The lack of portability and interoperability between cloud platforms at different service levels is the main issue affecting cloud-based services today. The brokering, negotiation, management, monitoring and reconfiguration of cloud resources are challenging tasks for developers and users of cloud applications due to the different business models associated with resource consumption, and to the variety of services and features offered by different cloud providers. In chapter 1 the concepts of cloud portability and interoperability are introduced, together with the issues and limitations arising when such features are lacking or ignored. Subsequently, chapter 2 provides an overview of the state-of-the-art methodologies and technologies that are currently used or being explored to enable cloud portability and interoperability. Chapter 3 illustrates the main cross-platform cloud APIs and how they can solve interoperability and portability issues. In turn, chapter 4 presents a set of ready-to-use solutions which, either because of their broad-scale use in cloud computing scenarios or because they utilize established or emerging standards, play a fundamental part in providing interoperable and portable solutions. Lastly, chapter 5 presents an overview of emerging standards for cloud Interoperability and portability. This paper examines the provisions of the EU proposal for a Data Act relating to cloud portability and interoperability through a joint economic and legal lens. It suggests that the minutiae of the definition of 'equivalence', designed to protect firms consuming cloud computing services, are quite different from portability and interoperability rules for simple products due to product complexity and ongoing innovation. While a certain level of portability and interoperability are natural and essential for customers, the breadth of net cast by 'equivalence' as proposed could yield unintended consequences that not only lead to operational challenges in transferring customer assets but even product simplification to a lowest common denominator, reducing availability of the cloud computing service variety that customers seek. In the worst case, an overly expansive definition of 'equivalence' could create a race to the bottom that harms dynamic competition and innovation and limits cloud computing service availability in regions covered by the regulation.

Cloud computing offers many advantages to researchers and engineers who need access to high performance computing facilities for solving particular compute-intensive and/or large-scale problems, but whose overall high performance computing (HPC) needs do not justify the acquisition and operation of dedicated HPC facilities. There are, however, a number of fundamental problems which must be addressed, such as the limitations imposed by accessibility, security and communication speed, before these advantages can be exploited to the full. This book presents 14 contributions selected from the International Research Workshop on Advanced High Performance Computing Systems, held in Cetraro, Italy, in June 2012. The papers are arranged in three chapters. Chapter 1 includes five papers on cloud infrastructures, while Chapter 2 discusses cloud applications. The third chapter in the book deals with big data, which is nothing new – large scientific organizations have been collecting large amounts of data for decades – but what is new is that the focus has now broadened to include sectors such as business analytics, financial analyses, Internet service providers, oil and gas, medicine, automotive and a host of others. This book will be of interest to all those whose work involves them with aspects of cloud computing and big data applications.
