The World Goes Pop
Author: Elsa Coustou
Publisher: Yale University Press
ISBN: 0300216998
Category : Art
Languages : en
Pages : 267
Book Description
A global survey of Pop art that reassesses its roots, impact, and legacy This groundbreaking book surveys the concurrent engagements with the spirit of Pop throughout the world, from the frequently studied activity in the United States, England, and France to less well-known developments in Central and Eastern Europe, Latin America, Asia, Africa, and the Middle East. One of the first publications to examine Pop art with this global scope, The World Goes Pop explores the wide-ranging movements that developed on different continents, such as Nouveau Réalisme, Neo Dada, New Figuration, and Spiritual Pop. This unique presentation offers the opportunity to compare how Pop art around the world differed due to geography, local traditions, and different cultures' social and political underpinnings. Fascinating essays touch upon key themes that factored into various Pop movements, including feminism, political representation, sexual politics, and seriality. A bold design and 200 striking illustrations showcase pieces by more than 60 artists, many of whose works have never been exhibited outside their home nations. The book also features a combined interview with a number of the living artists featured within, giving important insight into the thoughts and processes of Pop's international practitioners.

The São Paulo Neo-Avant-Garde
Author: Mari Rodríguez Binnie
Publisher: University of Texas Press
ISBN: 1477329862
Category : Art
Languages : en
Pages : 249
Book Description
"Throughout the 1970s and into the 1980s, in the wake of the installation of Brazil's military dictatorship, artists and art collectives in Brazil used their work to critique the government and its sanitized images of Brazil, its use of torture, and its targeted persecutions. Mari Rodríguez Binnie's The São Paulo Neo-Avant Garde studies this art and its engagement with politics and mainstream institutions and traditions. During this period São Paulo was home to a growing number of high-rise office buildings, and many of the artists studied here held day jobs that gave them after-hours access to new technologies of mass production that became foundational to their work. As the author writes, "By appropriating processes such as photocopy, offset lithography, and thermal and heliographic printing, these artists simultaneously challenged the hidebound institutions of São Paulo's art world, as well as the regime's own manipulation of mass media through censorship and propaganda. The artists did so through works that, in their radical content and form, hinged on establishing alternative networks of communication both at the local and international levels." The study moves forward chronologically and thematically, with each chapter examining a particular set of works in their broader contexts"--

Visualizations of Urban Space
Author: Christiane Wagner
Publisher: Taylor & Francis
ISBN: 1000828611
Category : Art
Languages : en
Pages : 232
Book Description
This book explores environments where art, imagination, and creative practice meet urban spaces at the point where they connect to the digital world. It investigates relationships between urban visualizations, aesthetics, and politics in the context of new technologies, and social and urban challenges toward the Sustainable Development Goals. Responding to questions stemming from critical theory, the book focuses on an interdisciplinary actualization of technological developments and social challenges. It demonstrates how art, architecture, and design can transform culture, society, and nature through artistic and cultural achievements, integration, and new developments. The book begins with the theoretical framework of social aesthetics theories before discussing global contemporary visual culture and technological evolution. Across the 12 chapters, it looks at how architecture and design play significant roles in causing and solving complex environmental transformations in the digital turn. By fostering transdisciplinary encounters between architecture, design, visual arts, and cinematography, this book presents different theoretical approaches to how the arts’ interplay with the environment responds to the logic of the constructions of reality. This book will appeal to scholars, researchers, and upper-level students in aesthetics, philosophy, visual cultural studies, communication studies, and media studies with a particular interest in sociopolitical and environmental discussions.
