Book Description
The history of the First World War continues to attract enormous interest. However, most attention remains concentrated on combatants, creating a misleading picture of wartime Britain: one might be forgiven for assuming that by 1918, the country had become virtually denuded of civilian men and particularly of middle-class men who – or so it seems – volunteered en masse in the early months of war. In fact, the majority of middle-class (and other) men did not enlist, but we still know little about their wartime experiences. Civvies thus takes a different approach to the history of the war and focuses on those middle-class English men who did not join up, not because of moral objections to war, but for other (much more common) reasons, notably age, family responsibilities or physical unfitness. In particular, Civvies questions whether, if serviceman were the apex of manliness, were middle-class civilian men inevitably condemned to second-class, ‘unmanly’ status?

Book Description
'Screamingly funny and deliciously candid, full of wisdom and joie de vivre, this is memoir with the grip of a thriller' ERIN KELLY Lynda La Plante has lived an illustrious life and has the stories to prove it. From her early days in Liverpool to her unexpected acceptance into RADA, joining peers Anthony Hopkins, John Hurt and Ian McShane; from beginning her scriptwriting career with Widows and Prime Suspect and becoming a BAFTA award-winning writer and producer, Lynda's tales of stage and screen will have you gasping in shock as well as laughing in the aisles. Lynda has an important story to tell, one of breaking down stereotypes and blazing a trail for others along the way. Starting her writing career in the eighties, an era of entrenched gender inequality both in front of and behind the camera, Lynda faced innumerable obstacles to her vision. Getting Away with Murder shows how she overcame them to create generation-defining television and become a multi-million-copy Sunday Times bestselling author. Still at the very top of her game, Lynda shares her story on her own terms, in a way that's guaranteed to make you laugh, cry and be inspired to live a life without limits.

Book Description
Crossover is the first novel in a series which follows the adventures of Cassandra Kresnov, an artificial person, or android, created by the League, one side of an interstellar war against the more powerful, conservative Federation. Cassandra is an experimental design — more intelligent, more creative, and far more dangerous than any that have preceded her. But with her intellect come questions, and a moral awakening. She deserts the League and heads incognito into the space of her former enemy, the Federation, in search of a new life. Her chosen world is Callay, and its enormous, decadent capital metropolis of Tanusha, where the concerns of the war are literally and figuratively so many light years away. But the war between the League and the Federation was ideological as much as political, with much of that ideological dispute regarding the very existence of artificial sentience and the rules that govern its creation. Cassandra discovers that even in Tanusha, the powerful entities of this bloody conflict have wound their tentacles. Many in the League and the Federation have cause to want her dead, and Cassandra’s history, inevitably, catches up with her. Cassandra finds herself at the mercy of a society whose values preclude her own right even to exist. But her presence in Tanusha reveals other fault lines, and when Federal agents attempt to assassinate the Callayan president, she finds herself thrust into the service of her former enemies, using her lethal skills to attempt to protect her former enemies from forces beyond their ability to control. As she struggles for her place and survival in a new world, Cassandra must forge new friendships with old enemies, while attempting to confront the most disturbing and deadly realities of her own existence.

Nevertheless, Silus has a grand plan. With Grand Merchant Angst out of the picture, he will take back the cargo stolen from him and rustle up enough coin to fix his ship. He’ll be back on track in no time. Except… There’s a new Mayor in town, and Heller has very specific instructions and a singular determination to fulfil them. She intends to pummel the pirate Province, and she’ll squash every scumbag one of them until she gets what she wants: de Senza, the Pirate King. Together with his dead parrot and Billy, the dead crow’s nest girl, Silus will face a battle like no other...

Book Description
Which is worse for society--Bud Miller, an incorrigible post-9/11 bacchanalian, or a coven of upper-level CIA psychopaths? Discover the ongoing machinations of covert torture, murder, and disinformation--"business as usual" operations--within an oblivious society of sheep ripe for the shearing. Local bigots of all stripes are seduced, indoctrinated, and recruited dirt-cheap into "Neighborhood Watch" gang-stalking networks. They are ordered to traumatize, ostracize, and corral a designated target, as their military masters roll up modernized electronic methods of No-Touch torture to round out the slow and calculated process of their target's ultimate destruction. Bud Miller is the CIA's unwitting poster boy. An antihero for the ages, it seems like everything he does makes it his own fault that he's a nonconsensual recipient of Organized Stalking and Electronic Torture. But there's more to that story. And guess what? It's classified! Without him they would have no better angle to convince the government that conducting "similar research" upon tens of thousands of other innocent, law-abiding citizens will justify the ongoing unregulated corruption of the USA's intelligence agencies by elite, unimpeachable psychopaths. So they've got to handle this one just right.
