Book Description
This title was first published in 2003. The Baltic Sea region offers exceptionally rich material for the discussion of civil society. This is because it has witnessed the erosion of communist regimes, the crisis of the welfare state, the increasing importance of new social movements and the shift from a centralist paradigm to one oriented towards networks. This engaging book focuses on the phenomena and prospects for civil society in north-eastern Europe which have had a major impact on political and scholarly debates since 1989. Nineteen experts from the region provide a comprehensive and comparative account of the history, the present state and the perspectives of civil society in the Baltic Sea area. The reader will learn that civil society should not only be seen in opposition to the state and that it has a major impact on current developments of European integration.

Book Description
The product of more than twenty years of research, first-person observations, discussions, and policy analyses, Nation-Building in the Baltic States: Transforming Governance, Social Welfare, and Security in Northern Europe explores the characteristics of the Baltic states as positioned in the northeast corridor in terms of military strife and polity development such as democratization. It details governments' efforts to abet transparency and trust by way of developing new public and private institutions for advancements like innovation and private wealth creation. The book examines the effects of various factors of economic and social adjustments in Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania. The authors explore the opportunities and problems that have shaped the region’s progress in the process of rebuilding democratic institutions and nation states after regaining their independence. They then describe the region’s progress in laying the critical internal foundation necessary for maintaining their political independence. The book also reviews the progress made in strengthening what the authors believe are key social functions of government in what the EU describes as its social market system: the provision of social welfare services that meets the needs of all. The book concludes with a realistic picture of future hurdles for this region, looking at lingering challenges and regional instabilities, policy mistakes not to be made again, and recommendations for national planning and resource management. Going beyond a massive, single explanation of recent Baltic developments, the book provides a broad picture of development of social and political trends and insights with separate evaluations of issues in the process of national transformation. It provides a foundation examining the forces that will shape the future of the Baltic states.

Book Description
The development of democracy in Central and Eastern Europe has become a predominant subject of research since the collapse of the USSR, whereas much amount of research on democratic processes in Poland, Czech Republic, Hungary, Slovakia or even Russia has given a comprehensive understanding of such processes in these countries, the Baltic States have been less explored, even less analysis on the relationship between civil society and democracy, and the ways in which non-governmental organizations, as a part of civil society, influence democracy. The book "Civil Society in the Baltic States.Impact on Democracy" analytically and empirically evaluates the impact of non-governmental organizations on democracy in the Baltic States, analyses the theoretical framework of relations between civil society, democracy and non-governmental organizations. This study is a valuable input into research of social sciences, and is in the interest of researchers, students and civil servants.

Book Description
Reconciling the diversity of political cultures, values and national identities with the European integration project is one of the most fundamental challenges contemporary Europe is facing. This challenge is readily apparent in the Baltic Sea region with its mosaic of peoples, cultures and identities. The impact of the ongoing process of European integration on the post-Communist societies on the Eastern rim of the Baltic Sea is indisputable. The negotiations between the European Union and the East European candidate countries were in fact accompanied by a large scale transfer of organization.

Book Description
Abstract: The information space of the Baltic region has gradually developed since the free exchange of cross-border messages was made possible by media technology and international law. The international conflict between Russia and some countries of the European Union has become a factor hampering its sustainable development. Moreover, the conflict has adversely affected the functioning of many civil society institutions in the Baltic Sea region. This study focuses on the publications in the scientific media associated with the political technologies that may provoke conflict but must contribute to good-neighbourly relations in the region. We carry out a comprehensive political analysis and a specific examination of the Western scientific media to develop a package of measures that Russia can take to counter the conflictprovoking influences in the region. The current condition of the regional information space and information operations aimed at inciting Russophobia and forcing Russia out o

The negotiations between the European Union and the East European candidate countries were in fact accompanied by a large scale transfer of organizational models and administrative routines designed to protect human rights and promote democracy. But European integration is just one of the challenges confronting countries, which are also engaged in state- and nation-building as well as democratic consolidation. The countries on the Western rim of the Baltic Sea have also been exposed to the increasing pressure of globalization and European integration. The three former Soviet republics of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania have been up against yet another challenge. After almost half a century of Soviet tutelage, they now have to engage in independent state- and nation-building. Theoretically, this made Baltic democracy particularly fragile. Yet the Baltic countries have also passed this litmus test. This book may in fact be seen as a tribute to the Baltic democracy. It is different from the democracy in the Nordic countries; it is different from the democracy in neighbouring Central Europe, but it is readily apparent that we are dealing with variations on a common theme.aReiheThe Baltic Sea Region: Nordic Dimensions - European Perspectives - Band 8"

Book Description
The end of the Cold War brought the Baltic Sea area into the limelight of political and cultural cooperation. Since then, the Baltic Sea area has gained a powerful position as a dynamic European sub-region. Still, like other similar kinds of areas defined by a sea or a river the Mediterranean world, the Black Sea, or the Danube the Baltic Sea area is hard to define and it has as many definitions as there are map-makers. The sea itself plays a central role but its influence is vague and always contingent. This book has sought to introduce multiple insights for focusing on the Baltic. All the contributions examine the question of the essence of the Baltic and the source of its unity and, in particular, concentrate on multi-culturality and multi-nationality in the Baltic context. Some of the contributions survey the whole Baltic Sea area, while others concentrate on the Baltic countries and some of them have found the Baltic in the limited environment of parish and town. The Baltic is comprehended as a label that opens stimulating possibilities for replacing nation-centrism with narratives of another kind extending beyond the current nation-states. This understanding provides opportunities for defining a multi-ethnic, multi-lingual and multi-cultural region and the diversity of identities that has existed.
