The freshwater eels, the Anguillids, have increasingly become the focus of attention for fisheries managers, scientists, researchers, policy makers, conservation bodies and other stakeholders. These species can be seen as a bellwether for issues affecting aquatic ecosystems – their steep decline and the management initiatives to try and reverse this trend, touch on subjects as diverse as disconnected waterways, loss of habitat, novel parasites, pollution, over-fishing and climate change. There are some 16 species of the Anguilla genus and all exhibit similar lifestyles, growing in waters often far-removed from their marine spawning grounds. This book was generated from the 1st UK International Eel Science Symposium which was held at the Zoological Society of London (ZSL) in June 2017. Hosted by the Institute of Fisheries Management (IFM), the ZSL, and the Environment Agency (EA), the Symposium was heralded as a success, with over 180 delegates in attendance. Fish and fish products are amongst the most highly traded food items in the world today, with most of the world’s countries reporting some fish trade. This assessment of commercial trade in CITES-listed marine species occurs within a broader context of globalization and a more general rapid expansion of the international trade in fish and fish products. It summarizes ten years (2007–2016) of trade in a subset of commercially exploited marine taxa listed in CITES Appendix II. We examine both CITES trade data reporting processes (including information on the practical elements of reporting by CITES Parties) and analyse CITES trade records. The analysis shows how, for Appendix II CITES-listed marine species, the overall number of direct export transactions reported by CITES Parties has increased sevenfold during 1990–2016 and how trade for each CITES-listed marine species sub-group has changed through time. An assessment is made, with assistance from species and trade experts, on the strengths and challenges of collating and reporting on trade in CITES-listed marine species. Additional datasets of relevance to marine species trade are highlighted, and recommendations for further refining and improving CITES trade reporting for marine species are provided.

The book contains also 16 color plates. BRIAN W. COAD has worked at the Canadian Museum of Nature, Ottawa since 1981. He was Curator of the National Fish Collection and is now a Research Scientist. From 1976 to 1979 he was an Associate Professor in the Department of Biology at Shiraz University, Iran and led expeditions to most parts of that country, collecting fishes for his systematic studies. His main research interests are on the systematics and faunistics of Canadian and Middle Eastern fishes. He is the author of over 320 scientific and popular works on fishes including such books as Guide to the Marine Sport Fishes of Atlantic Canada and New England (1992), Encyclopedia of Canadian Fishes (1995), Expedition Field Techniques: Fishes (2nd revised edition, 1998), and Fishes of Tehran Province and adjacent areas (2008). Books on the Arctic Marine Fishes of Canada and the Fishes of Afghanistan are in preparation. His website www.briancoad.com has a Dictionary of Ichthyology with over 23,000 terms defined, Fishes of Canada: Annotated Checklist, and booklength presentations on the Fishes of Canada's National Capital Region and Freshwater Fishes of Iran. He received his B.Sc. in Zoology in 1970 from the University of Manchester, England, an M.Sc. in 1972 from the University of Waterloo, Ontario and a Ph.D. in 1975 from the University of Ottawa.
