Book Description
Excerpt from Cicero Select Letters To meet the demand for a brief volume of Cicero's letters, to be read in connection with Cicero's orations, the present selection of letters has been prepared and edited in accord with d'ooge's Select Orations of Cicero. While, in view of their purpose, the choice of selections has been limited to the easiest 'and plainest letters, yet the list will be found sufficiently extensive to include illustration of Cicero's most salient personal traits and many of the most prominent phases of his career. Owing to the close connection between this book and Professor d'ooge's Cicero, it has seemed necessary to include in the vocabulary only those words which do not appear in his vocabulary to the Orations. As these words appear for the first time in the text they are marked with a star to show that they have been 'placed in the vocabulary of this book. Book Description
Excerpt from Selected Letters of Cicero IN editing these selections from Cicero's correspondence, I have attempted to meet the needs of the Freshman who, when he enters college, is suffering from indifferent teaching. This statement is made without the slightest desire to cast aspersions upon the excellent work in Latin done in many schools. I am firmly convinced, however, from my own experience and from the testimony of other men, that Latin is poorly taught in the majority of our Southern high schools and preparatory schools. No one who has had charge of Freshman classes needs argument from a fellow-sufferer to prove that this is true. The notes in this volume are, there fore, quite full. The introduction has'been made very brief, because of the well-nigh universal habit among students of skipping that portion of a textbook altogether. Subjects usually treated at length in introductions are here set forth at proper points in the commentary. The selections which appear in this book were made with a view to throwing light upon Cicero's habits and character, and upon the life in which he moved. Although this basis of choice coincides with that adopted by practically all recent editors, yet there are several letters presented here which are not found in the editions in general use at the present time. Book Description
Excerpt from Cicero in His Letters: Edited With Notes In the Introduction, in dealing with Cicero as a public man, I have confined myself to those epochs in his career in which, as it seems to me, his char acter and motives have been misapprehended or deliberately misrepresented. The Introduction is for the most part abridged from the Correspondence of Cicero, where the subjects here treated are dealt with in greater detail than seems necessary for those for whom the present volume is intended, namely, boys in the higher forms at the schools of Great Britain and America. Book Description
Excerpt from Letters of Marcus Tullius Cicero: With His Treatises on Friendship and Old Age Marcus Tullius Cicero, the greatest of Roman orators and the chief master of Latin prose style, was born at Arpinum, Jan. 3,106 B. C. His father, who was a man of property and belonged to the class of the "Knights," moved to Rome when Cicero was a child; and the future statesman received an elaborate education in rhetoric, law, and philosophy, studying and practising under some of the most noted teachers of the time. He began his career as an advocate at the age of twenty-five, and almost immediately came to be recognised not only as a man of brilliant talents but also as a courageous upholder of justice in the face of grave political danger. After two years of practice he left Rome to travel in Greece and Asia, taking all the opportunities that offered to study his art under distinguished masters. He returned to Rome greatly improved in health and in professional skill, and in 76 B. C. was elected to the office of quaestor. He was assigned to the province of Lilybaeum in Sicily, and the vigor and justice of his administration earned him the gratitude of the inhabitants. It was at their request that he undertook in 70 B. C. the prosecution of Verres, who as praetor had subjected the Sicilians to incredible extortion and oppression; and his successful conduct of this case, which ended in the conviction and banishment of Verres, may be said to have launched him on his political career. He became aedile in the same year, in 67 B. C. praetor, and in 64 B. C. was elected consul by a large majority. The most important event of the year of his consulship was the conspiracy of Catiline. This notorious criminal of patrician rank had conspired with a number of others, many of them young men of high birth but dissipated character, to seize the chief offices of the state, and to extricate themselves from the pecuniary and other difficulties that had resulted from their excesses, by the wholesale plunder of the city. The plot was unmasked by the vigilance of Cicero, five of the traitors were summarily executed, and in the overthrow of the army that had been gathered in their support Catiline himself perished. Cicero regarded himself as the savior of his country, and his country for the moment seemed to give grateful assent. But reverses were at hand. Book Description
Excerpt from Fifty Letters Of Cicero: Edited For The Use Of Schools I am' in hearty sympathy with the idea of widening the range of texts read in the Latin course of high schools and academies, and I believe that no Latin is better suited for the third or fourth year than some of the letters of Cicero. Most of these letters give us the language in a less formal style than the orations, and show us common uses of words and constructions in the classical period. Book Description
Excerpt from Letters To Atticus, Vol. 2 of 3 This second volume of Cicero's Letters to Atticus embraces one of the most important epochs in Roman history, the fall of the Republic in the struggle between Pompey and Caesar. The storm which had long been brewing broke just as Cicero returned from Cilicia over the question of Caesar's resignation of office. By the agreement made in 56 b.c. Caesar's governorship of Gaul was renewed for five years and he was then to be re-elected to the consulship in 48 As the renewal dated from March 1, 54 b.c., his term of office would naturally expire on March 1, 49 but according to the rule in vogue at the time of the reappointment he would not be superseded until Jan. 1, 48 b.c., the date on which he would enter on the consulship. He would therefore hold office continually, and his enemies, the Senatorial party, would have no chance of bring ing a prosecution against him, which might be fatal to his career. But in 52 b.c. They had induced Pompey to bring forward a new law by which ex magistrates did not proceed to 3 province as soon as their office ended but after an interval of five years. Consequently for the next five years special appoint ments had to be made by the Senate - for example Cicero's appointment to Cilicia - and, as they could be made at any time, it would be perfectly easy to supersede Caesar on March 1, 49, and secure his prosecution, condemnation and downfall before he could enter on the consulship.
