Book Description
Narrated by Hewitt's great friend, journalist Colonel Brett, ‘The Chronicles of Martin Hewitt’ highlights one of the 19th Century's most popular detectives. In these six short stories, written by Arthur Morrison, Hewitt is called in to solve crimes and mysteries that have Scotland Yard scratching its head. From missing gold to a missing memory, Hewitt must use all his sleuthing skills to put the pieces of the various puzzles together. A must for fans of Conan Doyle's ‘Sherlock Holmes,’ and for anyone who likes their mysteries served up with a bit of class. Born in London's East End, Arthur Morrison (1863 – 1945) was a journalist and author. He began work at the age of 16 as an office boy for the London School Boy. Later, he progressed to journalism, first as a clerk for the ‘People’s Palace’ newspaper, and then as an editor for the ‘Evening Globe.’ His first published piece was a poem, submitted to ‘Cycling’ magazine. Later, he would serialise many of his major works, such as ‘Tales of Mean Streets’ and ‘Child of the Jago’ in the ‘National Observer’. Morrison's stories are characterised by his unflinching depictions of life in the East End. In addition, he wrote detective stories featuring the lawyer-cum-detective, Martin Hewitt. Hewitt was one of the 19th Century's most popular sleuths, only outshone by Conan Doyle's ‘Sherlock Holmes.’

Book Description
Martin Hewitt solves a series of baffling crimes in this thrilling installment of the adventures of London’s cleverest detective An artist’s work is vindictively vandalized, and the artist is found murdered in his smoking room. Gold bullion totaling £10,000 mysteriously vanishes from the ill-fated steamship Nicobar as it sinks en route to Plymouth. A clerk disappears from a large London bank along with a rather substantial amount of the company’s money. A lunatic Frenchman, discovered beaten and bloody in the street, screams in terror when offered a loaf of bread. These dark occurrences have two things in common: The obvious solutions are not the solutions, and private detective Martin Hewitt is on the case. Not even the fabled Sherlock Holmes can best Hewitt’s talent for disguise and his ability to uncover the small, telling clues missed by others. Narrated by his good friend Mr. Brett, the investigative chronicles of Martin Hewitt are entertaining exercises in the fine art of deductive reasoning. This ebook features a new introduction by Otto Penzler and has been professionally proofread to ensure accuracy and readability on all devices.

Book Description
A powerful and heartfelt coming-of-age novel that follows Martin Kelso as he grows up in 1980s New York and faces the magic of first experiences, as well as the heartbreak of hard-won life lessons. Martin Kelso's comfortable world starts to change at the age of eleven. Girls get under his skin in ways he never noticed before. His cousin Evie, who used to be Marty's closest confidante--the one who taught him the right way to eat a pizza and how to catch tadpoles--has grown up into a stranger, mysterious and unpredictable. Marty and his best friends once inhabited fantasy worlds of their own making, full of cowboys and cops and robbers, where the heroes always won the day. But now, as neighborhood kids are attacked on their walk to school, they find themselves wanting to play a new game that better prepares them for real life. As life changes quickly and Marty feels less secure with himself, the difference between games and reality, friend and foe, and right from wrong becomes much more difficult to distinguish. At the same time, this new world offers possibilities as exciting as they are frightening. This poignant debut perfectly captures the intense emotion, humor, and earnestness of young adulthood as Marty, age eleven to seventeen, navigates a series of life-changing firsts: first kiss, first enemy, first loss, and, ultimately, his first awareness that the world is not as simple a place as he had once imagined. Includes a Reading Group Guide.
