Book Description
Excerpt from The Cholera Epidemic of 1873 in the United States In the preamble to a joint resolution of the Forty third Congress of the United States, adopted during its first session, and approved by the President March 25, 1874, it was set forth that Epidemic Cholera had prevailed during the year eighteen hundred and seventy -three in various parts of the United States, especially in the valley of the Missis sippi, causing a deplorable mortality and that it is highly important, whenever such epidemics occur, that the facts concerning the spread of the disease and its mode of propagation should be ascertained as fully as possible, with a View to the prevention or limitation of future outbreaks. It was therefore ordered that a medical officer of the Army, in connection with the Supervising Surgeon of the M urine-hospital Service, should ascertain such facts, and make a detailed report of the information collected, on or before the first day of J annary, eighteen hundred and seventy five, to the President, to be submitted to Congress.
