Book Description
Politics can be a profitable business investment. This can be found in Republican era Canton amidst a politically fragmented China. Competing merchant groups in Hong Kong sought to finance the regional government in Canton in return for financial concessions. Colonial Hong Kong made these attempts possible because it offered the merchants a haven to which they could retreat. Merchants in modern China, different from their western counterparts, remained dependent on the political authorities. This patronage system made commercial endeavours dependent on politics and, significantly, it embedded business in politics - a phenomenon that still exists in China today.

Author: Roland Felber
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1136873104
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 340
Book Description
Based mainly on Russian and Chinese archival sources that have become available only since the early 1990s, the authors of this collection explore the main aspects of the Chinese Revolution in the crucial period of the 1920s, such as the United Front policy, the development of communism, the Guomindang perspective, institutional issues and social movements. The various approaches and interpretative methods employed by the contributors from seven countries have resulted in a collection of articles representing four very different and until now almost independent discourses: the European, the American, the Chinese, and the Russian.

The Hong Kong-China Nexus
Author: John M Carroll
Publisher: Cambridge University Press
ISBN: 1108899501
Category : Political Science
Languages : en
Pages : 151
Book Description
The Occupy Central/Umbrella Movement of 2014 and the anti-extradition protests of 2019 revealed how much Hong Kong's relationship with mainland China has deteriorated since the former British colony returned to Chinese sovereignty in July 1997. With mutual distrust and suspicion at an all-time high, many Hong Kong people have become increasingly hostile toward the Chinese government and the mainland in general, identifying themselves as Hongkongers rather than as Chinese. Yet, as John Carroll shows, for more than 150 years, colonial Hong Kong and China not only coexisted with but benefited each other, even during the anti-imperialist campaigns of the Republican and Communist eras. The porous boundary between Hong Kong and China enabled the two to use each other economically, politically, socially, and culturally. The Hong Kong–China nexus, although firmly embedded in global dynamics of colonialism, Cold War politics, and capitalist expansion, defies many common assumptions about nationalism, colonialism, and decolonization.

Hong Kong Mobile
Author: Helen F. SIU
Publisher: Hong Kong University Press
ISBN: 9622099181
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 510
Book Description
In this interdisciplinary study, the authors argue that Hong Kong should strengthen the mobility of its population. One country, two systems is a concept not uniquely reserved for post-1997 Hong Kong. Historically, the territory has thrived on being simultaneously part of China and the world. Flexible positioning at the margins has made it a node in the crossroads of empires, trading communities, industrial assembly lines, and now global finance, consumption and media. This essential characteristic, Hong Kong as a 'space of flow,' has always been the source of its success. The book shows that a porous border in fact has been maintained in the post-war years. Unique institutions developed over the century have absorbed waves of immigrants entering from China. However, the study warns that the population is now aging when compared with other world cities and China's fast growing urban centers. Only with a massive input of young, educated, and diverse human talents can Hong Kong remain a vibrant portal for the creative fusion of capital, goods, services, cultural horizons, aspirations and civic energies.

A Modern History of Hong Kong
Author: Steve Tsang
Publisher: Bloomsbury Publishing
ISBN: 0857730835
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 539
Book Description
This major history of Hong Kong tells the remarkable story of how a cluster of remote fishing villages grew into an icon of capitalism. The story began in 1842 with the founding of the Crown Colony after the First Anglo-Chinese war - the original 'Opium War'. As premier power in Europe and an expansionist empire, Britain first created in Hong Kong a major naval station and the principal base to open the Celestial Chinese Empire to trade. Working in parallel with the locals, the British built it up to become a focus for investment in the region and an international centre with global shipping, banking and financial interests. Yet by far the most momentous change in the history of this prosperous, capitalist colony was its return in 1997 to 'Mother China', the most powerful Communist state in the world.
