Excerpt from Elements of Qualitative and Quantitative Chemical Analysis An examination of this Table Shows at once that all normal nitrates and acetates, and all the salts of the alkaline metals (potassium, sodium) are soluble. Other similar general conclu sions can 'be deduced by the student himself, which, once familiarly learned, will be very useful in working out equations. Book Description
Quantitative Chemical Analysis - Volume One is the work of Dr. C. Remigius Fresenius, a notable German chemist, translated from the sixth German edition by A. Vacher. As the name of the volume indicates, Quantitative Chemical Analysis is a chemistry textbook focusing on chemical analysis. Following a brief introduction, the book opens with an examination of the operations involved in chemical analysis, highlighting proper techniques for determining quantity and outlining a general procedure to follow when conducting quantitative analysis. Section two is a discussion of reagents, the substances used to create chemical reactions. Fresenius then outlines the various groups of acids and bases that exist, including a chemical analysis of each substance. The book concludes with a section on the separation of various elements from one another, including a how-to for the reader. Fresenius has succeeded in creating a thorough textbook on quantitative chemical analysis. This is a book for the serious student or teacher of chemistry, and should not be mistaken for a beginner's textbook. The principles discusses are advanced and require a good deal of background knowledge about the subject matter. The book is written in a detailed but clear style that will appeal to all those involved in chemical analysis. Quantitative Chemical Analysis - Volume One is a valuable work and a worthwhile addition to your library of chemistry textbooks. Fresenius' writes with a sense of authority that guides the reader through the process of quantitative chemical analysis. If the subject matter of this text is of interest to you, this book is certainly worthy of your attention. Excerpt from book: QUANTITATIVE ANALYSIS. (PART 1.) INTRODUCTION. 1. Definition of Quantitative Analysis.?Quantitative analysis is that branch of chemistry which has for its object the study of the methods for the determination of the exact quantities of the different constituents of a substance. If it is required to merely ascertain the amount of one of the elements contained in a substance, the operation is called a determination. If the amount of each of the elements is required, the process is called an analysis. Qualitative analysis informs us what elements a substance contains, without reference to quantity; and quantitative analysis takes the subject up where qualitative analysts leaves it, and shows us the exact amount of each of these elements contained in the substance. For instance, by means of qualitative analysis we learn that a silver coin is composed of silver and copper, and, by noting the relative sizes of the precipitates obtained, we would judge that it contains more silver than copper, but more than this we cannot learn from qualitative analysis. Having learned by qualitative analysis that the coin is composed of silver and copper, we are now ready to subject it to a quantitative analysis, and by this means determine the exact amount of each of these elements that it contains. Obviously, the qualitative analysis precedes the quantitative, for we must know what elements a substance contains before we determine their amount. For notice of the copyright, see page immediately following the tille page. The methods employed to obtain these results vary greatly, and are based on different principles. Depending on the principles employed, the subject may be divided into three parts; viz., gravimetric analysis, volumetric analysis, and special methods. 2. Gravimetric Ana...
