Sons of the Buddha
Author: Jason A. Carbine
Publisher: Walter de Gruyter
ISBN: 3110254107
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 269
Book Description
Intended as a methodological and theoretical contribution to the study of religion and society, this book examines Buddhist monasticism in Myanmar. The book focuses on the Shwegyin, one of the most important but least understood monastic groups in the country. Analyzing the group as a tradition constructed around ideas of continuity and disruption/rupture, the study illuminates key aspects of monastic and wider Burmese Buddhist thought and practice, and ultimately argues for the distinctiveness of elements of that thought and practice in comparison to the Buddhist cultures of Sri Lanka and Laos. After situating the Shwegyin within the history of Buddhist monasticism more generally, and within the vicissitudes of modern Burmese political history, the book proceeds along two scholarly avenues. It adopts an interdisciplinary method with attention to biographical, administrative, doctrinal, and ethnographic evidence. Theoretically, the book engages scholarly discussion about “traditions” and their “traditionalisms” and advances a specific type of interpretive approach built on bringing the viewpoints and practices of the Shwegyin into conversation with the enterprise of understanding larger historical and cultural patterns in the Buddhist societies of South and Southeast Asia.

Withholding Nothing
Author: Cha'ntel Y. Davis

ISBN: 1491899115
Category : Fiction

Pages : 84
Book Description
When I tell you that my heart raged against the Lord, it raged against the Lord when it came to this particular season of my life. Whether I made these decisions for myself or if this were another one of those assignments God had me on. Either way they both were tormenting and long suffering. I thought God had finally answered my prayers. I was living right. I was doing everything that He said for me to do, to the best of my ability. He said, He would give me my hearts desire. Just wait on the Lord, they say! I thought I was being rewarded for not becoming weary during my well doing. Then with a blink of an eye, He snatched it all back. Where did I go wrong? I felt as though all my good living had gone in vain. I had not been living this way my whole life not even half my life, but I had to start some place. Why is it that we blame God when the plans that we have for our own lives dont work out? Have you ever considered Gods plans for your life are even better than the ones you could ever imagine for yourself? Thats why Hes the Father because He knows whats best for his children. He is Alpha and Omega. He knows your beginning and your end. For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord. Plans to prosper you and not harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. Then you will call upon me and pray to me, and I will listen to you. You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart. I will be found by you, declares the Lord, and will bring you back.... to the place from which I carried you into exile. Jeremiah 29:11-14. Does that sound like a God that wants to keep something from you? If anything, He wants to get everything that He has for you, to you. But like any good parent, He doesnt give you anything youre not ready for. My prayer to you is that before you make any major decisions for yourself; align them with the plans of the Lord. Allow your heart to be open to hear His voice and what He has to say concerning your life. Make sure youre not asking God for things and people that are not in His will for you to have. Or you will always feel as though Hes never hearing or answering any of your prayers.

Geological Belts, Plate Boundaries, and Mineral Deposits in Myanmar
Author: Andrew Mitchell
Publisher: Elsevier
ISBN: 0128033835
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 530
Book Description
Geological Belts, Plate Boundaries and Mineral Deposits in Myanmar arms readers with a comprehensive overview of the geography, geology, mineral potential and tectonic plate activity of Myanmar. The book focuses on the nature and history of the structural belts and terranes of Myanmar, with particular emphasis on the mineral deposits and their relationship to stratigraphy and structure. The country has a long history of plate tectonic activity, and the most recent plate movements relate to the northward movement of the India plate as it collides with Asia. Both of these are responsible for the earthquakes which frequently occur, making the country a geologically dynamic region. Additionally, Myanmar is rich in mineral and petroleum potential and the site of some of Southeast Asia's largest faults. However, many geoscientists are only recently becoming familiar with Myanmar due to previous political issues. Some of these barriers have been removed and there is emerging international interest in the geology and mineral deposits of Myanmar. This book collates this essential information in one complete resource. Geological Belts, Plate Boundaries and Mineral Deposits in Myanmar is an essential reference for economic geologists, mineralogists, petroleum geologists, and seismologists, as well as geoscience instructors and students taking related coursework. - Provides an accessible history of the geological research and mineral exploration and extraction conducted in Myanmar and an overview of its rich mineral resources - Presents the historical and current plate tectonic activity in the region, offering seismologists and geophysicists a guide to Myanmar's structural geology and risk for earthquake activity - Richly illustrated with more than 100 maps, diagrams and photographs to capture the geology of Myanmar and aid in the retention of key concepts - Focuses on the nature and history of the structural belts and terranes of Myanmar

Show Me A Hero
Author: Melvin B. Voorhees
Publisher: Pickle Partners Publishing
ISBN: 1839743026
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 513
Book Description
“Show me a hero and I will write you a tragedy” is the quotation from F. Scott Fitzgerald that supplies the poignantly appropriate title to this novel. The hero is a three-star general in field command of the U.S. Army in Korea. He is a magnificent hero—brave, profoundly patriotic, professionally skillful, intensely human. His tragedy is double-barreled: his position requires him to fight a containing war when he believes that he should fight a war to win; and his personal life is closing in defeat because his wife and son cannot share his devotion to the Army. But the book is far more than the personal tragedy of General Lark Logan. It gives a panoramic and detailed picture of a modern army action. It traces the peculiar and often humorous experiences of enlisted men; it presents the details of a grimly conscientious court martial; it follows the working press and the working espionage systems of both sides; it affords a touching picture of a brave and deeply religious superannuated chaplain. Each of the individual stories is interrelated in a fine and highly skilled mosaic of narrative that keeps the reader turning pages to see what happens next—and that always satisfies him with the solution of each dramatic situation as it develops. In the end, one is exalted by the fine picture of devoted Americans in action—Americans who, with all their blatancy and occasional commercial cynicism, live the sort of lives and perform the sort of actions which have made America great and must continue to do so.
