Book Description
Excerpt from Charleston Medical Journal and Review, 1859, Vol. 14 I do not intend to enter upon, or discuss the question of its contagiousness in the familiar sense attached to this word. The poison which gives rise to it, is contained, we all know, in the atmosphere; on board a ship it exists often with such virulence, that all are attacked who venture to remain on board even a short time, not having gained immunity by acclimation, or previous seasoning. Nor does any one doubt that the immediate vicinity of such a ship is dangerous in greater or less degree. And farther, as atmospheric air, with all its intermixtures and qualities, and properties, must be entangled in certain porous articles, it is reasonable, on all fair and theoretic grounds, to believe that many such articles may become fomites, and convey the disease, or the cause of the disease for we do not, and cannot, know how much may be contained of the poison in any given bulk of air, or how much air must be inhaled or applied to the surface to be efficient. Book Description
Excerpt from The Charleston Medical Journal and Review, Vol. 9: January 1854 In all cases in which the soft parts are well relaxed, and the os uteri fully dilated or dilatable, and the labour has not advanced so far, or the membranes been ruptured so long, and the uterus so forcibly contracted upon its contents, as to render the operation impracticable, without the exertion of a considerable degree of force, we should proceed to deliver at once by version. Where the membranes are ruptured, immediate action is the more imperatively called for, to avoid the increased diffi culty to the operation, which would be occasioned by the complete escape of the liquor amun, and the rigid contraction of the uterus upon its contents. Book Description
Excerpt from North Carolina Medical Journal, Vol. 1: January, 1878 The first suture is pas; ed through the anterior ap, close along the bottom of the fissure, entered well back, and withdrawn just at the edge of the undenuded strip, which is to form the canal; again made to enter the Opposite lip at a similar point, so as to emerge on the vaginal surface at a point corresponding to the one of entrance in the other lip. Three or four sutures are usually sufficient for each side. A little care is required in passing the one through the crown of the cervix and approximating the edges of the 08. If the sutures for both sides be passed before securing any of them, much difficulty will be avoided. An undue ow of blood may usually be checked bv tightening the tourniquet, when one is used. Should this fail. Twisting of the wire next to the bottom of the angle will easily control it. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from The New York Medical Journal, 1874, Vol. 20 Here is a result reached at the end of seven or eight years, by which this man's bladder is at last in the way of being regularly relieved without painful and damaging effort. I trust he will be saved from stone, although he did incur the danger of retention as I had foretold; for he can empty his bladder thoroughly now, and also wash it out with warm water at will, if necessary. But it is very clear to me, after observing his case through all these years, that if the patient had gone to work when he first applied to me for relief, and learned within the year to help himself with the catheter, he would have saved himself both time and torment, and that at this moment his bladder and kidneys would be in better con dition to serve him for the next ten years.
