The Aborigines of Port Phillip, 1835-1839
Author:
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 392
Book Description
This second volume takes up the theme of Aborigines in Port Phillip during the official foundation years of 1835 to 1839. Practically every contemporary official document relating to Aborigines in Port Phillip which could be located in Australia and overseas has been included. Nothing of significance has been omitted. So much unique material was found that it has been necessary to break the subject into two parts, for publication as volumes 2A and 2B. The material reveals, sometimes graphically, what can happen when a native race pursuing a tradition-bound nomad existence is suddenly confronted with vigorously expansion, technologically advanced forces backed by their own strongly-held economic, religious and political ideas. It shows the reasons for some of the first serious clashes between the two races and the efforts on the part of missionaries and official forces to overcome enmity in the new settlement.

Eureka
Author: John C. Molony
Publisher: Melbourne University Publish
ISBN: 9780522849622
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 288
Book Description
Before dawn on 3 December 1854, colonial troopers at Ballarat attacked a group of gold miners who had thrown up a stockade in defiance and defence. Some diggers had guns, but many were unarmed; some twenty of them were killed, along with four troopers. In the decades that followed, the truth of what happened that morning became obscured by partisans on both sides. For many years the Eureka Stockade was regarded as a shameful event and almost forgotten; more recently, it has been celebrated as a righteous stand against injustice. John Molony's Eureka vividly recreates the story of Eureka and unravels the myths that have come to surround it. This new edition of Molony's classic work, now beautifully illustrated with historic Eureka images, will be welcomed by everyone with an interest in the history of Australian democracy.
