En 1878, trois ans après l'inauguration de son monument, Charles Garnier écrivait dans son Nouvel Opéra : "L'opéra est un art riche – une synthèse des arts – et le lieu dans lequel les hommes viennent le goûter doit préparer, accompagner, compléter leur plaisir. Le bâtiment doit être à l'unisson ; il doit constituer un équivalent, dans l'ordre de l'architecture, de ce qu'est l'art lyrique dans celui du spectacle". Un siècle et demi plus tard, l'Opéra Garnier n'en finit pas d'étonner le visiteur car son architecte de génie en avait pensé chaque recoin, capable de fondre en une subtile alchimie l'ensemble des arts par une succession de chocs architecturaux : sur la façade où les ors brillent, masques, festons et fonds mosaïqués enchevêtrent leurs reflets dans la polyphonie des marbres aux origines multiples ; la statuaire, extraordinaire, orne frontons, loggias et avant-corps et se dresse fièrement vers le ciel.
