Book Description
This work describes the characterization of aged polymer modified bitumens to evaluate their potential for recycling. A tri-block co-polymer modified binder was selected and characterized using standard bitumen qualification techniques, i.e., the Superpave PG protocol. We developed a procedure to characterize the relative concentration of polymer in asphalt cements by gel permeation chromatography. Infrared spectrographic, thermogravimetric and rheological techniques were used to identify changes in the binder components as a result of aging. A correlation between field aging time and simulated aging by PAV was developed; PAV with humidity proved to be the best prediction. A comparison was established between the field aged materials and a series of lab aged binders. All binders were characterized with respect to their composition and rheological properties. In general, residual polymer was detected using gel permeation chromatography analysis except when extensive oxidative age hardening of the binder had occurred. Recycling of this material will require additives to restore the desired rheological properties to the binder blend.

Book Description
Solving Problems with Microscopy Comprehensive resource, based on real case examples, on the ability of the microscope for solving problems This book takes a “why to” rather than the common “how to” approach to demonstrate the capabilities of microscopy to solve problems. It provides entertaining and informative case examples and lessons regarding the unique value the microscope brings to problem solving by experienced scientists in various industries, including criminal and civil forensic science, manufacturing, environmental science, pharmaceutical science, cultural heritage, and biological sciences. Sample topics covered in this learning resource include: History of problem solving with microscopy Fortune favors the prepared mind The value of multiple associations The importance of context Knowing your limitations (i.e. knowing what you don’t know) Microscopists and other professional scientists who use microscopy can harness the information in this book to make better and more informed decisions by improving their problem-solving strategies and processes.

Book Description
This report presents issues associated with long-term aging of polymer modified asphalt cements (PMACs) as reflected by dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) data. In this study a standard SBS (styrene-butadiene-styrene block copolymer) polymer modified asphalt cement containing 3% copolymer (PMAC) meeting LADOTD specifications for PAC-40HG and PG 76-22M was selected and subjected to accelerated laboratory aging. Procedures were developed for simulation of long term aging of asphalt binders using multiple pressure aging vessel (PAV) operations in the absence and in the presence of water. Three, five and seven year old field aged asphalt samples originally of similar PMAC composition as that of PG 76-22 listed above were recovered from a wearing course mixture located on interstate I-55 near Granada, MS. All binders were characterized with respect to their composition and rheological properties.

Book Description
Ohio Department of Transportation has adopted the hot mix asphalt concrete containing polymer modifiers for use in the interstate highway pavement. Among the various reasons cited for the adoption of polymer modifiers are the favorable field experiences by ODOT, extensive literatures reporting enhanced performance, such as rutting resistance, low temperature thermal cracking resistance, and possibly fatigue endurance. However, despite these favorable findings, there are still cases involving premature failure of hot mixtures containing polymer modifiers. Concerns regarding optimum polymer content, compatibility between polymer additives and asphalt cement, proper mixing and compaction procedure remain to be resolved. Furthermore, performance based specifications to ensure production of desirable final asphalt concrete product require additional development. Questions regarding the suitability of Superpave binder testing procedures for the polymer-modified binders need to be clarified.
